Arthur Fils secured a straight-sets victory over Alex Michelsen at the European Open in Brussels, advancing to the tournament semifinals and strengthening his position in the race for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin, according to coverage from Puntodebreak.

Chasing a Spot at the ATP Finals in Turin

Arthur Fils holds the sixth position in the ATP Race to Turin when accounting for the absence of Jannik Sinner, according to Puntodebreak. The French player acknowledged the weight of the milestone following his quarterfinal win. Fils enters the weekend guaranteed to exit Brussels at a minimum as the world number 8 in the live rankings, with a tournament title pushing him past Felix Auger-Aliassime into the number 7 spot, as noted by Puntodebreak.

A Gripping Tiebreak Against Alex Michelsen

The quarterfinal clash hinged on a tense second-set tiebreak that ended 14-12 in favor of the Frenchman after he survived multiple set points and squandered several match opportunities, as detailed by the ATP Tour. The victory avoided a deciding third set and propelled the Frenchman into the tournament’s final four, building on a breakthrough season that includes a Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati despite recurring physical setbacks.

Unusual Preparation Disruptions in Brussels

Fils managed a disrupted schedule in Belgium following the first-round withdrawal of Jaume Munar, leaving the player without a match for six days while training continuously, as reported by Puntodebreak. The tournament also altered its court selection mid-event, introducing shifting playing conditions.

Fils Advances to the Brussels Semifinals

With his place secure among the tournament’s final four, Fils advances to face his next opponent on the Brussels schedule, continuing a late-season push to cement his qualification for Turin alongside the tour’s elite competitors.
