Joel Schwärzler is training at the Südstadt performance center under the conditions set by veteran coach Günter Bresnik, following a split with former coach Markus Hipfl after Wimbledon and the Kitzbühel tournament in July. Austrian tennis broadcaster sport.ORF.at reported that the former junior world number one, who won the 2024 French Open junior doubles title, has secured three titles on the ATP Challenger Tour.
Bresnik addressed Schwärzler’s lack of progress on the senior circuit during an appearance on ORF, emphasizing that raw talent alone does not succeed at the professional level. The coach pointed out that Schwärzler has openly admitted to not being among the hardest workers on tour. According to Bresnik, international professional tennis eliminates uncommitted talent without hesitation, leaving no room for players who refuse to put in grueling hours.

“Hard work beats talent, if talent doesn’t work hard,” Bresnik said, citing what he called a classic American sporting maxim. He identified Schwärzler as a clear example of that principle over recent seasons.
Despite questioning the player’s training habits, Bresnik offered praise for Schwärzler’s demeanor away from the court, describing him as a smart and pleasant young man. He noted that Schwärzler possesses the capability to elevate Austrian tennis significantly if he applies himself correctly, potentially succeeding Dominic Thiem as the country’s top-ranked men’s player.
The coaching dynamic remains open-ended. Bresnik stated that whether he formally takes over the coaching role is secondary to Schwärzler’s own commitment, though he confirmed that the player has spent the last two weeks training alongside his group in Südstadt under his standard terms.
Schwärzler parted ways with Markus Hipfl following his first-round exit against compatriot Jurij Rodionov at the Generali Open in Kitzbühel in July. His transition from the ITF junior circuit, where he reached the singles semifinals in Paris in 2024 alongside his doubles title, has yielded three titles on the ATP Challenger Tour. Bresnik indicated that Schwärzler now grasps the demands of the professional tour and appears ready to commit to a sustained period of rigorous practice.
