COLLEGE BASKETBALL legend Bob Huggins has been diagnosed with a “progressive cognitive condition” that has begun to affect his memory ahead of a special hall of fame induction, his family revealed.
Huggins, 73, enjoyed a glittering 46-year coaching career that saw him making it to the NCAA Final Four twice and reaching 26 NCAA tournaments until his retirement in 2023.
During his time at the Walsh Cavaliers, Akron Zips, Cincinnati Bearcats, Kansas State Wildcats and West VirginiaMountaineers, the basketball icon amassed 935 career wins.
That led to an induction into Cincinnati‘s pantheon after 16 successful years with the college basketball giants that started back in 1989.
The ceremony takes place tonight and will also see former Philadelphia Eagles stars Jason Kelce as well as Connor Barwin getting inducted.
Huggins’ family have been keeping his condition – which impacts “aspects of his daily life” – private for a long time but decided to publicly disclose it ahead of his hall of fame accolade.
A statement read: “Bob is living with a progressive cognitive condition that has begun to affect his memory, and aspects of his daily life.
“While the family has chosen to keep this matter private over the past several months, they believe this is an appropriate time to share the news with the many people who have supported Bob throughout his remarkable career, particularly as he prepares to be honored with induction into the University of Cincinnati’s James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame.”
Huggins’ family confirmed he will be attending the James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony.
The statement continued: “Throughout his extraordinary basketball journey, Bob’s greatest impact has extended far beyond wins, championships, and the basketball court.
“From his early coaching years at Walsh University to his time at Akron, Cincinnati, Kansas State, and West Virginia, his defining passion has always been the young men he coached, the relationships he built, and the lives he helped shape.
“Generations of former players have benefited not only from his leadership as a coach, but also from his mentorship, loyalty, and lifelong friendship. Bob is deeply grateful for the tremendous honor being bestowed upon him by the University of Cincinnati.
“His years leading the Bearcats represent an unforgettable chapter in his life, filled with cherished relationships, remarkable accomplishments, and memories that will always hold a special place in his heart.
“He’s looking forward to returning to Cincinnati this weekend, celebrating with former players and friends, and sharing in a moment that recognizes not only his accomplishments, but also the enduring bonds formed along the way.”
Huggins’ family then asked for their privacy to be respected and insisted there will be no further comments.
The statement added: “Although Bob and his family recognize the challenges that lie ahead, they remain focused on the relationships, experiences, and moments that bring him joy.
“He continues to be surrounded by the unwavering love and support of his wife, June; his daughters, Jenna and Jacqueline; and his entire family.
“The Huggins family extends its sincere appreciation to the former players, colleagues, fans, and friends who have shown Bob such extraordinary love and support over the years.
“The family respectfully asks for privacy, compassion, and understanding as they navigate this next chapter together.
“Out of respect for Bob and his family, neither the family nor representatives of the University of Cincinnati will be providing additional comments or responding to media inquiries regarding his health at this time.
“Additionally, Bob and his family will not be available for media interviews or questions related to his induction into the University of Cincinnati’s James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend.”
Cincinnati extended their “heartfelt support” to Huggins’ family after their emotional statement.
The Bearcats then went on to pay tribute to the West Virginia great’s career.
The University of Cincinnati Athletics issued the following statement: “Cincinnati Athletics is excited to welcome Coach Bob Huggins and his family back to campus this weekend for his induction into the James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame.
