Ethan Ampadu set for amazing milestone vs Man Utd as Leeds United look to end 24-year wait

Jean-Matteo Bahoya had not been born the last time Leeds United recorded a home win over Manchester United.

September 2002 saw Harry Kewell score the winner against a Red Devils side in their pomp. In the 24 years since, there have not been too many home battles due to Leeds’ long exile from the Premier League.

Just seven clashes at Elland Road have taken place from that day on and one of those was in the League Cup. Of course, Leeds have recorded some famous wins at Old Trafford; the 2011 FA Cup clash and April’s 2-1 league triumph.

But many feel this Sunday is Leeds’ best chance in a long while to record a home win over the arch enemy, and back-to-back wins against them for the first time since 1972. Because it all seems a bit chaotic over in Manchester…

Carrick under pressure

Man Utd have not won any of their past four games and have recorded just one over the first six matches of the Premier League season. And in midweek, Lisandro Martinez hit out at the board and essentially the new signings by suggesting he had wanted more investment.

Ex-players have accused the team of being unrecognisable from those of yesteryear and the pressure is being cranked up on Michael Carrick, who held a meeting with Martinez over his comments this week.

Ominously for him, he has lost five of his six meetings against Daniel Farke - and the one he did win was a second round League Cup tie while at Middlesbrough. Last season, in January, Ruben Amorim was sacked after a draw with Leeds.

While Carrick is not likely to deliver a similar outburst against the board, it is possible he could befall the same fate at Amorim upon another defeat.

Ampadu missed the January draw at home last season due to suspension but so will take on Manchester United as Leeds skipper for the first time in the role. Beloved by fans, they see him as captain who embodies everything they want in their leader.

In testament to his time at Leeds, having been named captain by Farke during the summer of his arrival, Sunday will mark his 100th game with the armband. At 26 years old, will be the youngest to do so since Billy Bremner managed the feat in 1968, aged 25.

Ampadu’s influence on the pitch is clear but also off the pitch he is the glue that binds the team together. A safe pair of hands in whatever is asked of him, Leeds will feel the signing of his new long-term contract this summer set the foundations of the following transfer window.

Leeds also face pressure

No one wishes to think about the worst but should Leeds fall to defeat then it brings up the fact that just one point will have been earned from three games. Of course, context matters. Arsenal are the champions while Man Utd can never be classed as pushovers.

Yet it would place some pressure on Leeds to get a result away at Sunderland next weekend. Leeds are high on confidence and will back themselves whatever the context.

On the flip side, with a win, more questions will be asked of why the board have not tied down a new deal with Farke. The current noises sound good but it is puzzling why a resolution has not been reached with eight months to go on his current deal.

These questions will only get louder should Farke earn yet another milestone win over the arch enemy.
