Connacht boss Stuart Lancaster believes that his side's thrilling 45-36 Champions Cup victory over Saracens was the perfect response to a heavy defeat to Glasgow in last week’s United Rugby Championship clash.

Cian Prendergast and Ciaran Frawley scored two tries apiece as Connacht turned on the style in Galway, with Cathal Forde, Shamus Hurley-Langton and Caolin Blade also crossing the line.

The result and performance was in marked contrast to last week’s 36-19 URC defeat to Glasgow in Scotstoun.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport afterwards, Lancaster hailed the performance of his side and their supporters as they kickstarted their European campaign in style.

"Yeah, I was buzzing, really. It was an amazing atmosphere, wasn’t it?" he said.

"You know, I think I was obviously disappointed at how we lost last week against Glasgow, but it was down to four maul tries, and I knew if we could address that, and we had enough in our armoury to challenge any team, really.

"We proved it last season, and I could see in training we had a real edge this week, and perhaps the disappointment of Glasgow was inside us.

"So yeah, to turn up and play the way we did, I’m delighted, really, for everyone, for the whole of the supporters and the family and friends of the players."

Lancaster has often spoken of making incremental improvements at Connacht as they look to improve year on year and a performance likes on this nature has him convinced that his side are heading in the right direction.

"It gives us belief that we’re on the right track," he said. "No team goes through the season unbeaten, and we’ve got a great squad building, but we are building.

"We’re not going to go from last year to the previous year to champions straight away, but you can see the steps coming. I can see the confidence in our defence, I can see the fluidity in our attack, I can see our defensive resilience in the maul growing.

"It’s not perfect, because when you play against Glasgow and Saracens and the likes of the Stormers, they’re all good teams, but I think Connacht are on the right track."
