Kempton Park Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club branch recently visited the community of 14 Geldenhuys informal settlement.
This visit followed visits to Pomona 125 and Pomona Ga Max sections in previous years; now it was the turn of the small community behind Atlas Road, next to Bonaero Park Mall, to host the Kempton Park Sundowns branch.
Young and old who gathered from the morning warmly welcomed the sanitary pads and clothes handed out on the day.
Community forum chairperson William Likotsi thanked the visitors for attending and for thinking of the community.
“It is the first time that we have received such goodwill. The community is still talking about the good gesture that they received on the day; even our young boys wish Mamelodi Sundowns can also assist with the development of soccer in the area,” said Likotsi.
During the visit, they handed out a lunch meal, sanitary pads and clothes, and, as part of the activities, played a top-four soccer tournament to keep everyone entertained.
The home team, Gashline FC, won the tournament, defeating the visiting Sundowns supporters club 2–0 in the final. Medals and a trophy were awarded to the winning team led by Speedy Mkhwanazi.
“We are just happy and thankful for everything that the organisers did for us. We wish more people could get involved and do the same thing for us,” said resident and captain of the winning team Speedy Mkhwanazi.
Kempton Park Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club branch chairperson Karabo Mahlangu said the principle of Ubuntu-botho guides them, proudly displayed on their club jerseys, and heeded the call of their club chairperson, Tlhopie Motsepe, who advised that they should try to play a meaningful and positive role in communities.
“What we brought here is just a small gesture to try to lift this community, especially with unfortunate recent events that have been happening around our town,” said Mahlangu.
