Bruno Fernandes has seemingly aimed another dig at Michael Carrick after Manchester United suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Portuguese midfielder liked an Instagram post about loyalty and losing interest, less than 24 hours after Carrick left him on the bench for the Premier League encounter.
The post read: ‘Never push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care.’ However, Fernandes’ like reportedly disappeared later, and his reasons remain unclear.
Fernandes was dropped following criticism of United’s tactics after their humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como, raising further questions about his relationship with Carrick.
Former United captain Gary Neville criticised Fernandes for publicly questioning the coaching staff, describing the midfielder as an ‘excuse merchant’ during his Sky Sports podcast.
‘Bruno can’t press. To come out and whinge after the game about the manager’s tactics, when you’ve just lost 4-1,’ Neville said, questioning his timing.
Daily Mail reports that Neville also argued that Fernandes should demonstrate leadership through his actions, particularly when supporters are travelling long distances to watch the struggling team.
Despite the criticism, Neville acknowledged Fernandes’ importance to United, saying the midfielder had delivered more than almost any other player during the club’s recent difficult years.
Meanwhile, Harry Maguire defended Carrick, insisting the players must accept responsibility for their performances and improve individually to help the team recover.
Former United defender Ashley Young was less forgiving, accusing the squad of appearing to have given up during the Bournemouth defeat.
Carrick remains under pressure, with reports suggesting club officials are discussing his future after United managed only two victories in their opening 12 league matches.
The manager insists he will continue doing what he believes benefits the club, although uncertainty remains over whether he will lead United into their next match against Chelsea.
