Former Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris has become the latest of Harry Kane’s former Spurs teammates to react to seeing him crowned the best player in the world.
The reaction from everyone associated with Tottenham over the last 48 hours has shown just how big an impact and legacy Kane left at the North London club.
Rarely, if ever, do you see in the tribal world of football a former player’s achievements being celebrated by fans as their own, but such was the 33-year-old’s impeccable character and professionalism that it is hard to feel anything but pure joy for him at this big achievement.
Several of Kane’s former teammates have reacted jubilantly to the Ballon d’Or win, with Dele Alli even admitting he was moved to tears when the striker won the award.
Lloris arrived at Tottenham in the summer of 2012 and saw first-hand Kane’s rise from an overlooked academy player, who was shipped out to various EFL clubs on loan, to a first-team regular, to one of the best in the world.
The former Tottenham captain admitted that the Bayern superstar is now a complete player and insisted that he is a role model in football, given the humility and resilience he has shown through his journey to the top.
Lloris told L’Equipe: “It’s fantastic for Harry. I’m happy for him and his family. It’s the culmination of his journey, his resilience and his clinical finishing.
“He may have a little less magic than some other players, but he’s much more than just a symbol of efficiency: he has an incredibly complete skill set that he has developed year after year.
“Today, he can do everything: play short passes, play long passes, make tackles and track back to defend. And he’s undoubtedly the best player in the penalty box. Right foot, left foot, headers – he has it all.
“It’s fantastic to see a former teammate win the Ballon d’Or, on home soil in London I knew him at the beginning of his career, when he relied heavily on runs in behind.
“Since then, he has adapted his game to the point where he can do everything. He has always had that athletic power and has always been a handful for defenders, but I think he has become stronger and more physically imposing with experience.
“I remember being impressed by his physicality against us at the 2022 World Cup, especially considering he had a formidable opponent in Dayot Upamecano Harry doesn’t seek the limelight, and he owes this Ballon d’Or to his professionalism and humility.
“He is a role model in our sport. I also really liked his speech and the way he made sure to thank everyone, leaving nobody out. Harry is not just a goal-scoring machine. At Tottenham, he set up Son Heung-min, dropping deeper and deeper to create chances and play those ‘laser passes’ that he’s known for.”
Having shared a dressing room with Kane for so long, the World Cup-winning goalkeeper is confident that the striker will not be resting on his laurels.
Lloris insisted that Kane’s sole focus will now be on winning the Champions League and a major tournament for his country.
The 39-year-old added: “We devoted many years of our careers to Tottenham and, even though we didn’t manage to win a trophy, that experience helped us in our careers. Knowing him, I know what his next big challenges are: winning the Champions League and winning the Euros at home in 18 months’ time. He still has many great years ahead of him.”
