It was one of those "you've got to see it to believe it" moments Friday night when Calvin University scored a final- second goal to beat rival Hope College in a battle at the top of the table in the MIAA.
Visiting Calvin (11-1-2) had taken a 1-0 lead in the first half before Hope (8-2-3) came out firing in the second to score two goals and take a 2-1 lead into the final 10 minutes of the Oct. 16 men's soccer match.
With just under nine minutes left, Calvin's Zac Brooks scored off a rebound in the goal area to tie the game.
It looked like it would end that way.
Instead, as the public address announcer counted down the final seconds, Calvin's Hans Pruis delivered a short pass to Jake Ziolo near the top of the box on the right wing.
Ziolo fired a high-arching shot that sailed over the hands of Hope goalkeeper Cooper Hutt and just cleared the crossbar as time expired, giving No. 12 ranked Calvin a thrilling 3-2 victory.
Was that one of the wildest finishes Calvin Coach Ryan Souders has been a part of?
"No? It was the wildest," Souders said. "I don't know that I've seen one, certainly in my time at Calvin, and I can't think of one somewhere else."
Hope has won or tied for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's soccer regular season title for the past two seasons. Calvin has won the MIAA tournament in seven of the last nine seasons to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division 3 men's soccer tournament.
The dramatic victory vaulted Calvin into first place in the MIAA standings ahead of Kalamazoo College (7-5-1). Calvin has a 3-0-1 conference record; Kalamazoo is 3-0-0.
Kalamazoo plays Albion (5-4-3 overall and 1-0-2 in conference play) on Saturday, Oct. 17.
