Police look to exploit Kigezi woes

  • Police FC vs Kigezi HomeBoyz FC – Kira Road Police Arena | 4 p.m.

Police FC will be looking to take advantage of Kigezi HomeBoyz’s struggles when the two sides meet at Kira Road Police Arena on Tuesday, with the visitors still searching for their first victory in the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League.

The Cops welcome the league newcomers hoping to build on their resilient display against Vipers SC and collect three points that could lift them up the table.

Police sit ninth with eight points from seven matches, having won twice, drawn twice and lost three times. They have scored four goals and conceded 10, leaving them with a goal difference of minus six.

Striker Bedia Ikamba Djuma will be one of the players expected to lead their charge, with Police needing greater firepower after a campaign that has produced mixed results.

They started brightly, beating Mbarara City 1-0 through a brilliant Ivan Mayanja goal before losing 1-0 away to Blacks Power.

A goalless draw against UPDF in the Armed Forces derby followed, but Police bounced back with a convincing 2-0 away victory over Lugazi.

Their momentum, however, stalled in October. A first-half red card contributed to a 3-0 defeat against Entebbe UPPC on Independence Day weekend before SC Villa handed them their heaviest loss of the campaign, thrashing them 6-1 at Kira Road Police Arena.

Police responded with a disciplined performance against Vipers, holding the Venoms to a goalless draw under floodlights at St Mary’s Stadium.

That result offered some encouragement, but the Cops know they must turn such performances into victories if they are to climb the standings.

Kigezi desperate for a breakthrough

For Kigezi HomeBoyz, the visit to Kampala presents another opportunity to get their season moving.

The Gorillas are bottom of the table in 18th place, with just one point from six matches. They have lost five games, drawn once, scored only one goal and conceded nine.

Their struggles in front of goal have been particularly costly, leaving them with little room for error as they adjust to life in the top flight following their historic promotion.

Kigezi began with a narrow 2-1 defeat away to Lugazi before holding KCCA to a goalless draw in what remains their best result of the season.

They subsequently lost 3-0 to SC Villa in Kampala and 1-0 away to Kitara before suffering a 2-0 defeat against NEC FC at their temporary home in Kamwenge.

Their latest outing brought more disappointment, as a late first-half strike condemned them to a 1-0 loss against Entebbe UPPC.

They now head to Police Arena knowing that another defeat would deepen their troubles, although ending their winless run against a side still searching for consistency would provide a significant lift.

Kigezi secured promotion to the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League after finishing level on 51 points at the top of the FUFA Big League. Dominic Abonga played a decisive role in that achievement, scoring a second-half brace against Blacks Power in the promotion-clinching contest.

Abonga will again be among the players expected to provide the attacking spark as Kigezi seek to rediscover the scoring touch that carried them into the top flight.

Goalkeeper Norman Angufundri, defender Julius Barasa, midfielder Innocent Ainebyona and forward Marvin Ainamani are the other players who will have to secure a breakthrough victory in their debut campaign.

The club’s adjustment to the top flight has not been helped by challenges away from the pitch.

Kigezi have been forced to play their home matches at Rwamwanja Stadium in Kamwenge after their Al-Madinah Stadium in Kabale failed to meet the required standards for top-flight football.

The arrangement has taken them away from their traditional home and fan base as they try to establish themselves among Uganda’s elite.

Against Police, the visitors will need to be more threatening in attack and more disciplined at the back if they are to return home with something to show for their efforts.

Police, meanwhile, will fancy their chances of collecting maximum points, but must guard against complacency against a side with little left to lose.

Elsewhere, SC Villa host Blacks Power at Wankulukuku, while NEC FC welcome Ntugasaze to Phillip Omondi Stadium. UPDF take on URA FC at Hamz Stadium, with all three matches scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

Express FC face Kataka FC at Hamz Stadium in the day’s evening fixture, which kicks off at 7:00 p.m.
