The Dutch football association, the KNVB, is launching a new program to increase the number of female coaches in football, De Telegraaf reports. That follows the findings that women hold only 5.8 percent of coaching positions nationwide, as scientific research found that women are motivated by female role models.
The new Coachstart program is set to begin with 23 female coaches across the country. The women, ranging from young footballers to young players’ mothers, are expected to act as role models and help attract 150 to 200 more women into coaching within a year.
Leadership can be learned, said football coach Rocky Hehakaija, who is the face of her Favela Street foundation and is known for television appearances. She also gives leadership training. “My qualities as a woman don’t get in the way at all. We’re good listeners and often look for solutions together instead of just imposing them. Those are fine leadership traits,” she told De Telegraaf.
Former Netherlands national team coach Mandy van den Berg was asked to serve as an ambassador for Coachstrat. It is a shame that so many potentially good trainers are not putting their talents to use, Van den Berg said, who led the UEFA Women’s team to the 2017 European Championship title.
Coaching is still too often seen as simply giving training sessions or discussing tactics, Van den Berg said. It is at least as often that coaches have to help guide the players, listen to them, and help them do their best.
