Orlando Pirates produced a commanding performance to begin their Carling Knockout Cup title defence with a 3-0 victory over Milford FC at Orlando Amstel Arena on Tuesday.

The Buccaneers, who booked their spot in the last eight, settled the contest in the first half, with Thapelo Mokobodi opening the scoring before Tshepang Moremi struck twice to put Pirates firmly in control.

The result also offered the Sea Robbers an ideal dress rehearsal for Saturday’s Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs, with the Buccaneers carrying momentum into one of the biggest fixtures on the South African football calendar.

Mokobodi continued his impressive run in front of goal, scoring his second goal in as many matches to give the hosts the lead in the 15th minute.

The 25-year-old midfielder burst forward from the middle of the park and linked up with Moremi, who picked him out with a well-timed pass. Mokobodi showed composure inside the box before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

Moremi then turned provider into scorer in the 34th minute, making the most of space behind the Milford defence.

The winger latched onto a pass, drove towards goal and rounded the goalkeeper before finishing from a tight angle to double Pirates’ advantage.

With the Carling Knockout offering a R100,000 prize to the player of the match, Moremi strengthened his claim for the award with another goal in first-half stoppage time.

The forward completed his brace to make it 3-0 before the break, capping a productive first half for the defending champions and leaving Milford with a mountain to climb.

Pirates managed the contest from there, protecting their advantage while keeping their attention firmly on the bigger challenge awaiting them this weekend.

For coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the emphatic win provides a welcome boost ahead of the derby, although the intensity and pressure of facing Chiefs will present a different test.

Pirates will now turn their focus to Saturday’s showdown, knowing that a victory over their Soweto rivals would provide an even bigger statement after their assured Carling Knockout start.

For Moremi, meanwhile, the brace was a timely reminder of his attacking threat as Pirates look to defend their cup crown while maintaining their push across multiple competitions.
