Riga FC secured a dominant 5–0 victory against FK Grobiņa in the Tonybet Higher League, forcing league leaders FC RFS to wait before celebrating the championship title, Jauns.lv reported. The convincing win at the Daugava Stadium in Liepāja keeps the gap at the top narrow as the Latvian football season enters its final stretch.
Entering the closing fixtures of the 34th matchday, RFS held a commanding position at the summit of the standings with 86 points from 34 games. Riga FC, navigating a demanding schedule that includes the UEFA Conference League main stage, sat second with 79 points from 33 matches. With RFS aiming to clinch the crown, Riga’s five-goal outburst ensured the title race extends deeper into November.

The fixture at the Daugava Stadium marked the final hurdle for Riga before the penultimate round of matches. ReKurZeme.lv reported that previous encounters between the two clubs this season ended in clean-sheet victories for the capital side, with scorelines of 3–0, 2–0, and 4–0. Grobiņa entered the match following a hard-fought 3–2 win over Ogres United, which briefly halted a four-match winless run as the club fights to avoid relegation playoffs.
Addressing reporters during a recent press conference, RFS head coach Viktor Moroz discussed the intense pressure of the title race and the contrasting expectations placed on the league’s frontrunners. Sportacentrs.com reported that Moroz pushed back against comparisons between the financial and structural capabilities of RFS and Riga FC.
“Many people say that Riga and RFS are in the same league, but overall, Riga is a team that, based on initial positions, is like PSG and Bayern Munich in their respective championships,” Moroz said, according to Sportacentrs.com. “They are expected to win four times out of five seasons. We are more in that league where Auda and Liepāja are.”
Moroz, who is guiding RFS through his seventh season in charge, emphasized that his squad evaluates every performance through a strict lens of internal improvement rather than relying solely on comfortable margins. Despite holding a firm grip on the league table, the RFS manager noted that neither club is immune to autumn dropped points.
The 2026 Virslīga season features a four-round format totaling 180 matches across 36 matchdays, with the final fixtures concluding on November 8. Behind the leading pair, FK Auda occupies third place with 67 points from 34 matches, followed by BFC Daugavpils with 48 points and FK Liepāja with 47 points. Further down the table, FS Super Nova holds 38 points, FK Jelgava has 32, FK Grobiņa sits on 29, and FC Tukums 2000 is on 25 points. Meanwhile, Ogres United has been relegated to the second tier after accumulating 18 points.
Riga FC will look to maintain pressure in its remaining fixtures, while RFS attempts to secure the points necessary to seal the championship before the final whistle blows on November 8.
