Eagles – 286-7 in 50 overs (Rodney Mupfudza 88, Tinashe Kamunhukamwe 71, Ryan Kamwemba 36; Roy Kaia 2/39, Shelton Mazvitorera 2/49, Derrick Sadoki 1/29)

Southern Rocks – 284 all out in 48.1 overs (Nathaniel Hlabangana 113, Panashe Taruvinga 103, Johnathan Campbell 14; Munashe Zata 4/51, Kudakwashe Macheka 3/52, Alex Falao 2/60)

Eagles won by two runs

Eagles survived a stirring fightback led by centurions Panashe Taruvinga and Nathaniel Hlabangana to edge Southern Rocks by two runs in a thrilling Pro50 Championship encounter at Masvingo Sports Club on Sunday.

Defending 286 for seven, Eagles appeared firmly in control with Rocks reeling at 41 for four, only for Taruvinga and Hlabangana to transform the chase with a magnificent 186-run partnership.

Their efforts brought the defending champions within touching distance of victory, but Eagles held their nerve, with a direct hit from Tinashe Kamunhukamwe securing the final wicket in the penultimate over.

The result gave Eagles a second win over Rocks in three days.

Sent in to bat, Eagles made a strong start through Kamunhukamwe and Marshal Takodza, who put on 102 for the opening wicket before Takodza departed for 26.

Kamunhukamwe struck 71 off 76 balls, including three sixes and 10 fours, before Rodney Mupfudza took charge with his second successive innings of 88.

Mupfudza faced 80 deliveries and hit a six and seven fours.

Tony Munyonga contributed 31 and Ryan Kamwemba 36 as Eagles built towards a substantial total.

Mupfudza and Kamwemba both fell with the score on 282, however, and three wickets in the final seven deliveries restricted Eagles to 286 for seven.

Roy Kaia was the pick of the Rocks bowlers, returning two for 39 from his 10 overs.

Rocks’ chase began disastrously as Kudakwashe Macheka bowled Ashley Mufandauya with the first ball of the innings before removing Matthew Campbell for eight in his next over.

Further setbacks left the hosts in deep trouble at 41 for four, but Taruvinga and Hlabangana mounted a determined recovery.

The pair gradually wrested control from Eagles, adding 186 in almost 30 overs to turn a seemingly one-sided contest into a tense pursuit.

Taruvinga was eventually caught off Munashe Zata for 103, leaving Rocks on 227 for four.

His 110-ball innings included four sixes and four fours.

With 60 required from the final 10 overs, Rocks remained well placed, but wickets began to tumble around Hlabangana, and the eighth fell at 256.

Hlabangana continued to carry the chase, completing a superb century before he was caught for 113 with the score on 279.

He faced 115 balls, striking two sixes and nine fours.

The last pair added five before Kamunhukamwe’s direct hit ended Rocks’ resistance, leaving them agonisingly short.

Zata led the Eagles attack with four for 51.

Mountaineers – 185 all out in 43.5 overs (Simbarashe Mudzengerere 44, Takudzwa Nyamugure 33, Dion Myers 20; Nkosana Mpofu 2/20, Tinotenda Maposa 2/24, Milton Shumba 2/26)

Tuskers – 186-4 in 36.4 overs (Milton Shumba 62*, Clive Madande 48, Aliakbar Hamid 26; Dion Myers 2/15, Victor Nyauchi 1/23, Michael Frost 1/54)

Tuskers won by six wickets

Milton Shumba’s unbeaten 62 and a decisive partnership with Clive Madande powered Tuskers to a six-wicket victory over Mountaineers in Mutare on Sunday, securing their second Pro50 Championship win over the hosts in three days.

Chasing 186, Tuskers were 78 for three before Shumba and Madande added 80 in 14 overs to put the visitors firmly on course for victory.

Mountaineers, sent in to bat, struggled to gain momentum against a disciplined Tuskers attack and were dismissed for 185 in 43.5 overs.

Alistair Frost fell early for four before Takudzwa Nyamugure and Dion Myers steadied the innings, taking the score to 53 before the second wicket fell.

Nyamugure made 33 and Myers 20, but wickets continued to fall regularly, leaving Simbarashe Mudzengerere to hold the innings together.

Mudzengerere top-scored with a patient 44 off 68 balls, including three fours, and was the last man out.

None of the other batters who followed Myers passed 20.

Four Tuskers bowlers claimed two wickets apiece, with Tinotenda Maposa the standout, conceding just 24 runs from his 10 overs.

Tuskers endured an uncertain start to their reply, losing their first three wickets with 78 on the board.

Myers dismissed Nkosana Mpofu for 16 and Aliakbar Hamid for 26 during a four-over spell.

Shumba and Madande then took control, adding 80 for the fourth wicket to turn the chase in Tuskers’ favour.

Madande struck two sixes and two fours in a brisk 48 off 47 balls before he was caught off Michael Frost with the score on 158. Shumba saw Tuskers home alongside Munashe Chimusoro, finishing unbeaten on 62 off 75 deliveries, with a six and four fours.
