Danske Bank Mageean Cup Section A, round three Gaelcholáiste Dhoire 0-11 St Killian’s, Garron Tower 4-11
THE final game in the Danske Bank Mageean Cup group stages, postponed last week because of the weather, took place yesterday afternoon in Glenariffe and resulted in a comfortable win for St Killian’s Garron.
That outcome means that every team in the competition has now suffered at least one defeat as we face into next week’s knock-out stage.
St Louis’, Ballymena have topped Group A on scoring difference and go straight into the semi-finals, where they will face the winners from the quarter-final between Cross and Passion Ballycastle v Gaelcholáiste Dhoire.
Holders St Patrick’s, Maghera will face St Killian’s in a quarter-final, while St Mary’s CBGS, Belfast take on St Patrick’s, Keady. The winners from those two games will be in opposition in the second semi-final.
Gaelcholáiste came into yesterday’s group game unbeaten but couldn’t keep pace with St Killian’s, who led at the break by 3-8 to 0-5.
All five scores for the Dungiven outfit came from Dylan Ó hEireamhóinn frees.
The Tower opened with two pointed frees from Ben Duncan and then Conlaoth McNaughton and Cahir McCambridge fired home goals apiece.
Just after an excellent McCambridge point from play in the 23rd minute, St Killian’s were awarded a penalty and McNaughton made no mistake for their third goal.
The second half was dominated by frees with McNaughton responding with three scores to Ó hÉireamhóinn’s six.
However, McNaughton finished the game by completing his hat-trick, catching a measured pass from Dylan McNaughton to hit the net with a fierce shot.
