Italian basketball is mourning a devastating double loss after the Italian Basketball Federation announced that a mandatory minute of silence will be observed across all weekend games following the deaths of Maurizio Cremonini and 17-year-old Anna Mellano.
The Italian Basketball Federation acted swiftly following the back-to-back tragedies that shook the national sports community within a 24-hour window. Governing body officials confirmed that all scheduled fixtures for the upcoming weekend will pause for a reflective moment of silence to honor both figures and extend condolences to their grieving families.
Maurizio Cremonini died in the night between Sunday, Oct. 18, and Monday, Oct. 19, at the age of 70 following a heart attack. A national instructor since 1981 and a federal technician for minibasket for over thirty years, he spent more than three decades shaping the fundamentals of the sport in Italy and internationally. He also collaborated with FIBA on educational initiatives. Federation president Petrucci led tributes to Cremonini, remembering him as an educator who viewed sport primarily as a tool for personal growth. The FIP expressed condolences to his wife Rosi and his children Andrea and Marco, remembering his extraordinary human and professional qualities. The FIP condolence statement noted that Cremonini was much more of an instructor and a trainer for the FIP, a job he did for more than thirty years with passion and foresight
and highlighted that Maurizio was an educator thanks to minibasket and believed in the formative message of the sporting game to which he dedicated his life
.
Hours after the federation learned of Cremonini’s passing, news broke of the death of Anna Mellano. Born in 2009, the young Basket Venaria player had already represented Italy on the youth international stage, competing in the July 2024 Under-15 Friendship Tournament in Varese. The federation remembered the teenager for fighting her illness with the same tenacity she displayed on the hardwood, leaving behind heartbroken teammates, coaches, and fans. The federation remembered her with the words Hello Anna, sweet and young blue
and noted that she fought with the same determination she has always shown on the parquet
against an unjust evil
