Aston Villa secured a well-earned three points away at Newcastle United on Saturday evening thanks to a first-half header from Johan Manzambi - but Unai Emery won't be happy with every aspect of his team's performance on Tyneside.

The Villans absorbed pressure and hit the Magpies on the counter effectively throughout, and could easily have scored more goals as a result of this deadly approach. Manzambi netted the solitary strike of the evening, expertly planting his header beyond Lukas Hornicek after Joao Gomes delivered a pinpoint outswinging cross from the right-hand side, eleven minutes before the break.

Emery's side threatened to add several more in transition as the game wore on, but they executed poorly on a number of occasions in the final third. Meanwhile, Newcastle's bluntness was as direct a result of Villa's resilient defending as it was wastefulness from Matthias Jaissle's men.

The result moves Villa up to 12th in the Premier League table, level on points with their north-east counterparts after seven matches.

Nicolas Jackson Would've Wound Unai Emery Up With Late Action vs Newcastle

Villa were under the cosh for much of the second half, and although Newcastle failed to create too many clear-cut chances, there was a lot of last-ditch defending from the West Midlands side.

Victor Lindelof, Tyrone Mings and Pau Torres all made crucial late blocks, clearances and headers at vital moments, slenderly preserving Villa's lead.

Newcastle had 58% of the ball and ten shots in the second half, while the hostile St. James' Park crowd was roaring them on. Emery, his players and the Villa fans up in the gods inside the old stadium had every right to feel anxious in the closing stages.

This anxiety wouldn't have been eased by Nicolas Jackson's arguably selfish action in the dying embers.

With the game poised at 1-0, in the fourth minute of six additional minutes, Jackson received the ball in the right-hand channel outside the box. He had a clear route to drive towards the corner, but instead opted to carry the ball inside and take a speculative shot just inside Newcastle's penalty area. It was blocked, and the home team subsequently regained possession and were able to launch another attack.

A minute later, John McGinn found himself in a similar position and made the sensible choice to take the ball towards the corner. Jackson flapped his arms in frustration after the Scotsman decided against crossing to him, clearly highlighting his desire to score rather than to protect his team's lead.

Emery, known for his meticulous attention to detail and obsession with discipline, certainly would've been furious with Jackson in that moment.

All 10 found — excellent!

The striker needed to make the best decision for the team, but chose to go for glory. Instead of using his strength to protect the ball and waste time in the corner, he took a half-hearted, fatigued shot in a moment of tension.

Ibrahim Mbaye, who was introduced in the 72nd minute, made a handful of poor decisions to shoot instead of passing to teammates late on, but his youthful exuberance can be dismissed as inexperience.

Jackson, on the other hand, should've made the mature decision. All will be forgiven as Villa managed to see out the game, but Emery will no doubt have words with his star striker at training on Monday morning.

Jackson Was Brilliant vs Newcastle

Nicolas Jackson

This rush-of-blood moment shouldn't take away from what was an excellent all-round, 8/10, performance from Jackson. While he was typically wasteful in front of goal, spurring several good opportunities to score, he led the line exceptionally for Emery's team.

He was a constant outlet for Villa as they looked to escape Newcastle's press, making relentless runs into the channels to receive passes from deeper players.

This endless running in behind made him a constant threat, and the Magpies' defenders struggled to deal with his pace and intelligent movement.

He finished the game with four shots, eleven touches in the opposition box and three chances created, showing just how influential he was in the final third.

If Emery can temper the Senegalese's mindset a little, and work on his finishing, then Villa will have one of the most potent strikers in the league.
