IND report confirms Estadio Nacional pitch has no structural damage

Following three massive K-pop concerts that drew roughly 200,000 fans to Santiago, Chile, officials have cleared the turf at the Estadio Nacional for competitive play. Cooperativa reported that the Instituto Nacional de Deportes (IND) released an inspection report on Monday confirming the pitch suffered no structural damage during the weekend events.

Inspecting the Pitch After Three Major Concerts

The inspection followed the dismantling of the stage and protective flooring used for the band’s performances on October 14, 16, and 17. Officials stated plainly that the ground exhibits no structural sinking or issues that would disrupt normal gameplay.

Weighing Weather Impact Against Normal Wear

While the surface passed its initial evaluation, the inspection noted visible signs of discoloration and yellowish patches in the grass. Officials emphasized that this level of wear is entirely expected following large-scale entertainment events. At the same time, heavy rainfall on October 13 left pockets of accumulated moisture across specific sectors of the field. This standing water directly contributed to a lower density of turf coverage in those isolated zones, though the vast majority of the pitch remains within normal agricultural parameters.

Restoring the Surface for Universidad de Chile and National Team Duties

To address the stress from both the crowds and the weather, recovery crews have already launched a comprehensive maintenance regimen. As detailed by the IND, the work includes rigorous cleaning, soil aeration, verticutting, leveling, seeding, and targeted fertilization. Production company DG Medios holds the financial and operational responsibility for these repairs under the terms of their event contract, while government inspectors monitor the execution.

Universidad de Chile is scheduled to return to the venue on Monday, October 26, to host Everton at 20:00 local time for Matchday 25 of the Liga de Primera. Looking further ahead, agronomist Marcela Muñoz noted that crews will also apply technical germination blankets ahead of Chile’s scheduled international friendly against Colombia on November 17, prioritizing safety over superficial aesthetics.
