Liverpool keeping a close eye on £75.9m player Lothar Matthaus has called “outstanding”

Liverpool are believed to be eyeing a move for Borussia Dortmund and Germany midfielder Felix Nmecha, seeing him as an alternative to Alex Scott.

In recent times, Bournemouth ace Scott has been mentioned as a leading option for the Reds, with Fabrizio Romano talking up a potential January move:

“Alex Scott could leave Bournemouth in January in case of big proposal. The stance has changed after meeting with agents as Bournemouth rejected all the proposals in the summer. Chelsea are still involved. Liverpool were keen also in July. Price tag expected to be over £100m, as BBC reports.”

But it looks as though Liverpool are eyeing possible alternatives to Scott, with a source telling Caught Offside the following regarding Dortmund midfielder Nmecha:

“Liverpool know Nmecha well and admire his qualities. While I wouldn’t expect him to be a priority target, he’s someone they’d be ready to turn to if Alex Scott proves too expensive or chooses another option.”

The reports also adds that Nmecha is “open to coming back to English football after spending 12 years in Manchester City’s academy between 2007 and 2019”, and that Liverpool are “keeping a close eye on the Germany international in case they can’t get a deal done for Scott.”

Could Felix Nmecha excel for Liverpool?

Nmecha is an interesting target for Liverpool, with the £75.9m-rated Germany international outlining his quality at the 2026 World Cup, arguably standing out as one of the few positives for his country.

The 26-year-old has matured as a player and is now coming into his peak years, and midfield legend Lothar Matthaus has spoken highly of him, which takes some doing:

“Nmecha is an outstanding player who brings many things that are needed in modern football. He also scores goals from the second row, similar to Pavlovic, he is physically very strong, fast and difficult to separate from the ball.”

Scott is an excellent player, but he does feel overpriced, given the English premium that exists with so many homegrown players, and he also isn’t necessarily the out-and-out No.6 that Liverpool crave in 2027.

Nmecha is more suited in that respect, bringing physicality and quality in front of the defence, so it may make sense for the Reds to move for him instead.

Either way, Liverpool have to add to their midfield, whether that be in the January transfer window or next summer, with their options feeling limited there, despite the emergence of Trey Nyoni.

There are doubts over Alexis Mac Allister’s long-term future at Anfield, with a new contract not yet handed to him, and there is a lack of balance in the middle of the park currently, with Nyoni the only true No.6.

Nmecha only extended his Dortmund contract earlier this year, signing until the summer of 2030, so the Bundesliga side are in a strong bargaining position when it comes to their demands.

But if Liverpool believe he is worth around £75m, he could be a great addition, with the Reds getting his best years during the remainder of his 20s and into his early 30s.
