Riffa Go Top With Derby Rout

Hidd Strike Deep Into Stoppage Time to Rescue Point

Riffa moved to the top of the Nasser bin Hamad Premier League with a 4-0 derby victory over East Riffa yesterday, while Al Hidd struck deep into stoppage time to hold Al Najma to a 2-2 draw as Matchweek Five continued.

Led by Kuwaiti coach Mohamed Mashaan, Riffa extended their unbeaten domestic run at Khalifa Sports City Stadium, climbing to 11 points following an emphatic win over their newly promoted rivals.

East Riffa, coached by Hisham Al Mahoozi, remain fifth with seven points.

Brazilian Wellington Moreira broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time, weaving past defenders before curling a superb effort into the bottom corner from outside the area.

Bahrain international Ali Madan doubled the advantage in the 57th minute with a spectacular overhead kick into the top corner after Moreira's cross from the left was not cleared.

Substitute Tayeb Meziani made it 3-0 in the 71st minute, applying the finishing touch after Cleiton Camargos' pass into the area caught East Riffa's defence off guard.

A Khalid Alsamhari own goal completed the rout after Kamil Al Aswad controlled Meziani's low delivery and squared across goal, where the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

Hidd Salvage Draw

At Bahrain National Stadium, Al Najma twice surrendered the lead as Serbian defender Nemanja Kojicic secured a dramatic point for Hidd.

Fethi Laabidi's side, fresh from victory in their previous outing, went ahead on the stroke of half-time when Brazilian striker Jean de Souza rose above Samy Frioui to head home.

Hidd, under fellow Tunisian Shukri Al Bajawi, equalised in the 67th minute through Mubarak Mohammed, whose deflected effort from the right side of the box wrongfooted goalkeeper Ammar Mohammed.

Rickson da Conceicao restored Al Najma's advantage six minutes later, heading in Hassan Madan's cross despite goalkeeper Mahmood Alojaimi getting a hand to it.

Kojicic then struck deep into stoppage time, tapping home Jamal Rashed's cross at the back post following a short corner. Initially disallowed for offside, the equaliser stood after a VAR review.

Al Najma remain seventh with seven points, while Hidd, still winless since opening day, sit eighth on five.

Matchweek Five concludes tonight with Al Ahli facing Al Khaldiya at Khalifa Sports City Stadium and defending champions Muharraq meeting Al Malkiya at Bahrain National Stadium. Both matches kick off at 7pm.
