Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Artūrs Šilovs stopped 27 of 32 shots and denied a penalty shot from Nathan MacKinnon, but the club still suffered a 5-2 road defeat against the Colorado Avalanche, dropping their fifth game out of their last six. The loss leaves Pittsburgh with seven points through eight games in the Eastern Conference, while Colorado improved to 11 points in the Western Conference.
The visitors opened the night with a burst of offense in the first period. Bryan Rust and Evgeni Malkin struck 29 seconds apart midway through the frame to give Pittsburgh a 2-0 advantage over Avalanche goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, as reported by Sportacentrs.com. Colorado answered quickly when Arturi Lehkonen scored just over two minutes later, trimming the deficit before the first intermission.

Lehkonen tied the game at 2-2 just 25 seconds into the second period, burying his second goal of the night off feeds from MacKinnon and Martin Nečas. Blackwood finished the contest with 29 saves on 31 shots, shutting down the Penguins’ attack after their initial two-goal surge.
The turning point arrived in the middle frame when Colorado seized the lead. Gabriel Landeskog capitalized on passes from Brock Nelson and Nazem Kadri at the 4:05 mark of the second period to put the hosts ahead 3-2.
Shortly after that go-ahead goal, Šilovs faced a major test when Colorado was awarded a penalty shot. The Latvian goaltender cleanly denied MacKinnon on the breakaway attempt, keeping the score tight. Yet the momentum proved fleeting as Landeskog scored again just 15 seconds later from close range. J.T. Hughes added his first goal of the season before the second intermission to push the Avalanche lead to 4-2.

MacKinnon stamped his influence on the game in the final frame, capitalizing on a power play at the 16-minute mark of the third period. The superstar center finished the night with one goal and three assists, bringing his season totals to six goals and ten assists. Nečas collected three helpers, and Cale Makar added two assists in the victory.
Šilovs logged 57 minutes and 26 seconds of ice time, facing nine shots alone from MacKinnon. Analysts noted that raw numbers hardly reflected the goaltender’s actual poise under heavy pressure, given the defensive breakdowns in front of him.
