We are now at that point in the season where yellow cards may start piling up, and Tottenham Hotspur will want to avoid the suspension pitfalls that plagued their squad last season.

Spurs received four red cards and 97 yellow cards last season in the Premier League, which led to several suspensions.

Along with the club’s injury crises, managerial upheavals and loss of form of key stars, the suspensions compounded the problem for the Lilywhites, who were let down by some of their big names, including former captain Cristian Romero.

That is an additional issue that Roberto De Zerbi will be keen to solve, and the early evidence suggests that he has done that, even though Rodrigo Bentancur is now suspended for three matches following his red card against Man United.

No other Tottenham player is close to a suspension at the moment

With Bentancur missing three important games, including a London derby at Stamford Bridge, De Zerbi would be keen not to lose any other of his key men to suspensions.

The good news is that no Tottenham player is close to reaching the yellow card threshold needed for a one-game suspension at the moment.

The Premier League’s rules state that players who pick up five yellow cards by the 19th fixture will get a one-match ban. Those who get 10 yellow cards before the 32nd fixture will receive a two-match ban.

Finally, anyone who reaches 15 yellow cards by the end of the season will have to miss three games.

As per FotMob, the only two Spurs players to receive more than one yellow card this season are Jan Paul van Hecke and Conor Gallagher, who are both on two.

Archie Gray, Mateus Fernandes, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie have one yellow card each.

Roberto De Zerbi may have the hardest selection decisions of the season so far against Coventry City

Many of the Tottenham boss’s selection decisions have been made easy for him so far this season, due to the injuries and fitness issues of various members of the squad.

The same was the case after the three-week international break, with De Zerbi deciding to leave out the likes of Bentancur, Mateus Fernandes, Omar Marmoush, Micky van de Ven and Andy Robertson due to their international exertions.

However, for the first time this season, the Tottenham boss may have some tough decisions all across the pitch for the clash against Coventry City on Monday, with the players having had nine days of rest since their 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
