Almaty Open is the Only Non-European Year-End Indoor Tournament

The Almaty Open stands as the only tournament held outside of Europe during the year-end indoor season, following the decision to move the Next Gen Finals from Saudi Arabia to Italy. According to a report by Clay, the event serves as a geographical bridge for players traveling from Asian cities like Shanghai and Tokyo toward the European indoor circuit.

Almaty Open breaks European indoor monopoly

While the final six weeks of the tennis calendar feature eight indoor tournaments, nearly all are concentrated in Europe. The Almaty Open is the sole exception in this period. When viewed across the entire season, only Almaty and Dallas host indoor events outside the European continent, though the Dallas event occurs in February during the same week as Rotterdam.

Dias Doskarayev, vicepresidente de la Federación de Tenis de Kazajistán, told Clay that the tournament allows the country to showcase Central Asia. He noted that the location is convenient for players who often make stopovers in Almaty while flying from Asia to Europe, describing the visit to Kazakhstan as an “exotic” experience for the athletes.

Three factors drove the tournament’s growth

The event originated in 2020 in Astana, securing its place on the tour through a combination of global crises and regional growth. The first catalyst was the COVID-19 pandemic; the circuit’s suspension between March and August 2020 allowed the Kazakh capital to join as an emergency venue. By 2021, the Federation purchased an official tour license.

A second factor was the suspension of Chinese tournaments, which led to a temporary promotion to ATP 500 status in 2022. Novak Djokovic claimed the title during that specific year. The third driver was the impact of sporting sanctions against the Russian Federation following the invasion of Ukraine, which positioned Kazakhstan as a critical geographic and cultural hub for the tour.

Cultural ties attract Russian players

The tournament has become a primary destination for Russian athletes who lack tour events in their own country. The 2026 main draw includes Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Karen Khachanov, and Roman Safiullin.

Andrey Rublev stated that the use of the Russian language makes the environment feel like his own country. Karen Khachanov, the 2024 champion, echoed this sentiment, noting that the organization and fans make him feel at home, describing the event as a surrogate for a home tournament.

Strategic move to Almaty in 2024

The Kazakhstan Tennis Federation relocated the event from Astana to Almaty in 2024 to promote the sport across a wider area of the country. While the tournament moved, the capital of Astana continues to host Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup series.

This shift occurred as the season’s end was restructured. The Almaty Open now runs simultaneously with tournaments in Lyon and Brussels. It precedes a sequence of events in Vienna, Basel, the Paris Masters 1000, and the ATP 250 in Stockholm, before the season concludes with the ATP and Next Gen Finals in Turin and Reggio Calabria.

Year Location/Status Key Event/Champion
2020 Astana (Emergency Venue) Joined during COVID-19 suspension
2022 Astana (ATP 500) Novak Djokovic
2024 Almaty (Relocation) Karen Khachanov

Common questions about the Kazakh indoor circuit

Why is the tournament significant for Russian players?
Because Russian players currently have no tour events hosted in Russia, the cultural and linguistic similarities in Kazakhstan provide a familiar environment that players like Khachanov and Rublev describe as feeling like a home event.

How does the Almaty Open fit into the travel schedule?
It acts as the “last frontier” before the European indoor swing, situated conveniently for players finishing the Masters 1000 in Shanghai before heading west.

What is the difference between the Almaty and Dallas indoor events?
While both are non-European indoor events, Dallas takes place in February, whereas Almaty is part of the year-end circuit, making it the only non-European event in the final weeks of the season.

The Almaty Open’s evolution from an emergency 2020 venue to a stable fixture reflects the broader shift of professional tennis toward Central Asia.
