Liverpool Abandon €60 Million Pursuit For Barcelona Midfielder Who Is Set To Sign New Contract Until 2031
Liverpool Abandon €60 Million Pursuit For Barcelona Midfielder Who Is Set To Sign New Contract Until 2031

Liverpool have abandoned their pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal, as his growing importance under Hansi Flick made a potential transfer more problematic.

According to SPORT, Liverpool contemplated a €60 million deal for the teenage midfielder in the summer of 2027, with manager Andoni Iraola a big fan.

However, Bernal’s importance at Barcelona has harmed the English club’s prospects of signing him.

Notably, Liverpool saw the prospect of giving Bernal more regular playing time as a possible advantage.

With the midfielder expected to receive more opportunities under Flick, that argument has grown less compelling.

Why Liverpool reduced their interest in Marc Bernal

Liverpool’s interest in Bernal arose amid Barcelona’s crowded midfield, where competition for positions has made regular minutes tough to secure for several players.

Barcelona already has Pedri, Rodri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Dani Olmo, and Fermin Lopez vying for midfield spots.

The circumstance caused uncertainty about playing time, which drew attention from teams throughout Europe.

Liverpool and Atletico Madrid were among the clubs linked with Bernal last summer.

However, Liverpool’s interest was especially noteworthy, as the club had considering providing roughly €60 million in 2027.

Iraola allegedly regarded Bernal not only for his abilities, but also for his potential for further development.

Liverpool’s objective was to provide him with a clear path to regular football if his possibilities at Barcelona were limited.

Barcelona strengthens its position with Bernal contract renewal

Bernal’s growing importance under Flick isn’t the only issue Liverpool faces; Barcelona has agreed to renew the midfielder’s contract, which will last until 2031.

As previously reported, the agreement includes a €500 million release clause intended to dissuade possible suitors and strengthen Barcelona’s position. The formal signing of the pact is likely in the coming days.

Notably, the renewal would represent a substantial vote of confidence in Bernal’s future with the club, complicating any move by Liverpool or another bidder to gain his services.

Barcelona would benefit from keeping Bernal, a talented midfielder who is already winning Flick’s trust.
