Michael Carrick has claimed the Manchester United squad have drawn a line under the Lisandro Martinez situation following the defender's explosive comments in midweek. Martinez slammed the United hierarchy following the club's 2-0 defeat away to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night. It was an unwelcome time to comment on the club's recruitment strategy given their dismal results at the start of the 2026/27 campaign. The Champions League defeat was their fifth winless match in a row across all competitions, with Carrick's men having won just two of their opening nine this season.
The English coach remarked: "It's done really. He's come out and acknowledged the situation. No drama for us as a group. There's a good feeling around the squad this morning."
Adding: "He acknowledged that it was a mistake by him and that was it. There is a feeling in the group that we really want to do something about this situation and do it quickly. We really have moved on. He [Martinez] is in the squad...
"I understand emotion at times, we ask for fire and players to care, but there is a way of doing that, which has been acknowledged. We need to carry that intensity and spirit and use that."
It comes after Martinez said: "I expect more, honestly. I expect more from our sporting director [Wilcox]. I have to be honest. And also, as a player, we have to do more. It's also important to build a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night.
"In general, I think last season we did everything. We created the base to build an amazing team. But this is something, to be honest, and to prove something. It's annoying and disappointing coming here. I'm not seeing my team trying to get an amazing result here. It's disappointing."
Carrick was quizzed on how Jason Wilcox responded and whether he should've addressed Martinez's comments publicly, with the ex-Middlesbrough manager saying: "I don’t think that’s for me to say. I’ve got no problem with how it is for me sitting here and talking to you guys and leading the group and the club from this position. We’re a really tight-knit group."
It comes at a poor time for United, given they find themselves just three points above the drop zone. On his side's current situation, Carrick added: "I don't need results. We all need results. It's not about me; Manchester United is bigger than an individual, so please, I don't go into every day thinking about me. It's not about any individual player; it's about this football club and its history...
"Just because people talk from the outside, that doesn't mean it's the truth. The squad today in training was in a fantastic place - that's the truth."
