Almost every good coach on earth is ttaken – Ghana FA

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has explained its decision to open applications for the vacant Black Stars coaching position instead of relying solely on a headhunting process to identify a suitable candidate.

GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum said the association had to widen its search because many of the highly rated coaches in world football are already engaged with other clubs or national teams.

According to him, the competitive nature of the international coaching market makes it necessary for the GFA to consider a broader range of candidates rather than focus exclusively on a limited number of established names.

“Almost every good coach on earth is taken so you have to probably widen your scope,” Asante Twum said.

His comments highlight the challenge facing the association as it seeks to appoint a substantive head coach capable of leading Ghana’s senior men’s national team.

A headhunting process typically involves directly approaching specific coaches whom an organisation considers suitable for a position. However, such an approach can be restrictive when preferred candidates are already under contract, committed to existing projects or unavailable for a new assignment.

By opening applications, the GFA can potentially attract interest from coaches who may not have been part of its initial considerations but possess the experience, qualifications and technical ideas required for the job.

The process could also give the association an opportunity to assess a wider pool of applicants and compare their coaching records, tactical approaches, international experience and plans for the Black Stars.

The appointment is particularly important for Ghana, given the expectations surrounding the national team and the need to establish a clear technical direction ahead of upcoming international competitions.

Whoever takes over will be expected to build a competitive squad, improve the team’s performances, make effective use of Ghana’s available talent and deliver results that meet the expectations of supporters.

The selection process will therefore be crucial in determining the direction of the Black Stars and the technical leadership under which the team will operate.

Asante Twum’s remarks indicate that the GFA considers an expanded search necessary in a market where many leading coaches already have commitments. The association’s decision to invite applications provides another avenue for identifying a candidate who can meet its expectations for the role.

The identity of the eventual appointee and the criteria that will determine the final selection remain key issues as the search for Ghana’s next substantive head coach continues.
