David Moyes has some decisions to make for this weekend’s game between Everton and Arsenal, and the right-back selection will be of particular interest.

Everton are heading to the Emirates Stadium for their latest Premier League fixture, and are looking to bounce back from the loss against Chelsea last weekend. A Pedro Neto double sank the Toffees at Hill Dickinson Stadium, and the performance from the home side left a lot to be desired.

David Moyes irked fans with some calls he made in the game, with Merlin Rohl being selected to play at right wing being a particularly frustrating one.

Rohl actually ended up at right-back, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles being taken off for Tyrique George in the 55th minute.

Maitland-Niles’ form has dipped in the last couple of games and there is now talk about a potential change at right-back for the visit to Arsenal, and Leon Osman has made his prediction.

Who should start at right-back for Everton against Arsenal, and why? Maitland-Niles has had the position held down, but struggled vs Hull and Chelsea…

Leon Osman predicts Jake O’Brien will start vs Arsenal

Realistically there are four options to play right-back against Arsenal for Moyes.

He could either stick with Maitland-Niles in the hope that he responds after a couple of poor displays. There is also the notion of him really locking in against his former club.

But then there’s Rohl, the man who finished the game against Chelsea at right-back. James Garner is also someone who could fill in, and that could create space for Hayden Hackney to come in in midfield, which is something plenty of fans would like to see given how positive he’s been.

But for Osman, Jake O’Brien will get the nod. Discussing Maitland-Niles’ dip, he said on the Outside the Box Pod: “He (Maitland-Niles) can definitely play right midfield. He can definitely play central midfield. He could. He could have put Rohl at right-back, who does OK, and has got good pace, crazy pace. And he could have put Maitland-Niles in front of him, he can rotate, I’m not saying he will. It’s an option.

“Going to Arsenal, their wingers are generally either their best or quickest players, aren’t they. I think maybe he does go with Jake O’Brien. Because Jake, for all of his faults in possession of the ball, he’s rapid and he’s strong and he’s not necessarily easy to beat in those situations. Maybe he (Moyes) does do that.”

Osman also suggested that Maitland-Niles will know he’s made mistakes recently and will want to make amends. He’s started the last four Premier League games, and whether he gets the chance to start a fifth remains to be seen.

Why O’Brien stands great chance of making first Premier League start vs Arsenal

With Arsenal being a physical side, one has to think that O’Brien stands a very good chance of coming into the team on Saturday. It’s been a frustrating season so far for him, with James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite clearly the preferred pairing in the middle. But this could be a chance for him to at least get some Premier League minutes under his belt.

He hasn’t started in the Premier League all season, but Osman does make good points. O’Brien is rapid and strong and would offer greater defensive solidity than Maitland-Niles.

Everton don’t have a great record at the Emirates so it would be wholly unsurprising to see Moyes go with a team with the aim of soaking up pressure, defending well and grinding out a result. Picking O’Brien would be conducive to that.

The likelihood is that Eberechi Eze will start on the left for Arsenal, and his 2.4 successful dribbles per 90 (via Fotmob) clearly show what a threat he is. He’s likely to get at the right-back, and O’Brien feels like the most solid counter of the four options available to Moyes.
