Lewis Hamilton’s experience could be priceless when it comes to helping Ferrari optimise their car and compete for World Championships.
It is the exact reason why Ferrari splashed the cash to swipe Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes, and the British driver has identified one area where there is plenty of room for improvement.
Ferrari are bringing upgrades to Austin for the upcoming United States Grand Prix, but Hamilton has urged his team to put more effort and focus into understanding Pirelli tyres.
Managing the temperature and wear of the Pirelli tyres is a huge part of Formula 1, and Hamilton believes Ferrari are leaving pace on the table.
As quoted by RacingNews365, the Ferrari driver believes there is “a huge amount of performance” to gain if it is properly understood.
“I think when people are watching, they probably don’t think too much in-depth about the tyres,” Hamilton said.
“I think the tyres are the things which deliver a huge amount of performance if you get them working properly.
“And believe it or not, that’s a science in itself, so it is an area we could do better. I think it could deliver quite a bit of performance.”
The good news for Hamilton is that Ferrari are certainly improving when it comes to managing tyres.
During Max Verstappen’s dominance in the ground-effect era, Ferrari often had a car capable of competing in pace, but not in endurance and durability. In race conditions, Red Bull and Verstappen were much more capable of holding onto their tyres.
Ferrari have certainly improved in this aspect under the new regulations, and in fact Ferrari’s biggest mechanical limitation is now in their rear axle and their engine deficit.
Since Hamilton has made his move to Ferrari, their management of tyres has improved, but clearly the seven-time world champion still feels there is much more to be done.
