Result: Kawempe Muslim 2-1 Uganda Martyrs

Agnes Nabukenya scored twice as Kawempe Muslim secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Uganda Martyrs in the FUFA Women Super League at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, on Sunday.

The victory lifted Kawempe Muslim to the top of the league table with seven points, while Uganda Martyrs suffered their first defeat of the campaign, leaving them with six points from three matches.

Uganda Martyrs started brightly and nearly took an early lead when Brenda Munyana’s effort was cleared off the line by Asia Nakibuuka.

Deborah Nanvule also tested Kawempe Muslim goalkeeper Juliet Nambuya, but the custodian was alert to the danger and gathered the ball safely.

However, Kawempe Muslim took the lead in the 23rd minute when Nabukenya capitalised on a defensive error by the visitors to put the hosts in front.

Nabukenya doubled the advantage just before the break with a brilliant finish inside the penalty area. She controlled Samalie Nakacwa’s long throw-in before unleashing a powerful half-volley that found the back of the net, sending the home fans into celebration.

Uganda Martyrs coach Edward Kasozi responded at the start of the second half with a double substitution, introducing fresh legs in an attempt to revive his side’s attack.

The visitors came close to reducing the deficit moments later when Sharon Nabbosa set up Angel Kigongo Auki, whose effort struck the woodwork.

Auki eventually found the net in the 64th minute, capitalising on a poor clearance by Sharifah Nakimera to give Uganda Martyrs hope of a comeback.

Despite the late pressure, Kawempe Muslim held on to claim all three points and move to the summit of the FUFA Women Super League standings.
