Mubiru to taste CAF Confederation Cup group stage football as Azam qualify

Hassan Mubiru will experience CAF group-stage football for the first time after helping Tanzanian side Azam FC qualify for the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

The Ugandan winger celebrated the milestone on social media after Azam thrashed Zanzibar’s KMKM SC 7-0 in the second leg of their second preliminary-round tie at Azam Complex Stadium on Friday evening.

“Alhamudulillah my first time to qualify for caf group stages ❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻,” Mubiru posted.

Azam had won the first leg 2-0 but went a step further in the return leg, completing a 9-0 aggregate victory under experienced coach Florent Ibenge.

Iddy Nado and DR Congo forward Japhte Kitambala each scored twice to give Azam a commanding 4-0 half-time lead.

KMKM tried to respond after the break but were punished on the counterattack, with Pascal Msindo making it 5-0 in the 49th minute. Abdul Sopu then scored twice to complete the rout and send Azam into the group stage.

For Mubiru, who joined Azam during the July 2026 transfer window, qualification marks a major step in his young career.

Born in 2004, the winger began his journey at Express FC, progressing through the club’s academy before joining KCCA FC in January 2023 on a five-year contract. He spent about 18 months with the Kasasiro Boys before moving to SC Villa in 2024.

Mubiru enjoyed a breakthrough 2025/26 season at Villa, registering several goals and assists to strengthen their attack. His performances attracted Azam, who signed him ahead of the new campaign.

He now has the opportunity to showcase his talent against some of the continent’s top clubs.

Mubiru shares his name with legendary Ugandan striker Hassan “Figo” Mubiru, who played for Police FC, SC Villa, Express FC and Rwanda’s APR. The former striker featured in the CAF Champions League with Villa during the 2024/25 season and is now an assistant coach at Kitara FC.

While the two share a name, the younger Mubiru is beginning to build his own continental reputation, with Azam giving him his first taste of group-stage football.
