Paul Put backs Majub Toto to boost Uganda Cranes’ defensive balance
Toto Majub in action

Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put has explained why young defender Majub Toto has been handed another opportunity in the national team ahead of the back-to-back encounters against Botswana.

Toto has been included in Uganda’s 30-man squad for the upcoming double-header against Botswana, with Put keen to assess the defender as he builds a balanced squad ahead of the continental tournament.

The coach pointed to the shortage of left-footed defenders as one of the key reasons behind Toto’s recall, highlighting the youngster’s qualities and potential to strengthen Uganda’s defensive options.

“If you consider (Jordan) Obita our central defender, we need other options for left-footed defenders and it’s not easy to find them. He has a good left foot and needs an opportunity as we build the team ahead of AFCON,” Put said during the squad unveiling at FUFA House in Mengo.

Put revealed that he has monitored Toto for some time, which informed the decision to bring him into the squad for Uganda’s previous friendly matches against the Democratic Republic of Congo to assess what he could offer the team.

“I have followed him for a long time, which is why we called him in for the friendly games against DRC to see what he can offer the team. He is a very positive player and equally disciplined,” he added.

The Belgian tactician emphasised the need for balance in defence, noting that Toto’s left foot, energy and discipline could make him a useful option as Uganda continues preparations for future assignments.

“We need a balance in our defence. That is why we need a left-footed defender. He is a young lad with lots of energy, so let’s see how this goes for him,” Put stated.

Toto’s inclusion provides him with another opportunity to impress the technical team and strengthen his case for a more regular role in the Cranes setup as Uganda prepares for the AFCON qualifying campaign.

Uganda will face Botswana in a two-legged qualifier, with the home encounter scheduled for November 14 at Hoima City Stadium.
