Liverpool’s Premier League game against Brighton on Sunday could be in major doubt as the UK is battered by storms.

Storms Austen and Boelo are currently sweeping across the country, with strong winds and heavy rain already leading to a number of social events being canceled on Merseyside this weekend.

The Reds are scheduled to host high-flying Brighton at Anfield on Sunday afternoon (2 p.m. UK time, 10 a.m. ET and 7 a.m. PT in the US), but the game is at risk of being called off due to adverse weather, with warnings already in place for both Saturday and Sunday.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning on Merseyside from midday on Saturday until 9pm on Sunday, with gusts of up to 80mph expected in some areas of the country.

The warning states that “injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible”, while road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, which could affect Brighton fans traveling from the south.

“Strong winds will spread across northern parts of the UK during Saturday afternoon, combining with spells of heavy rain,” a statement from the Met Office said.

“Initially strong southerly winds will affect parts of Scotland before more widespread and even stronger westerly winds develop later on Saturday. Very windy conditions will then persist overnight and through much of Sunday before gradually easing from the southwest later.

“Gusts of 55-65 mph are likely widely with some coastal and exposed areas potentially seeing gusts of 70-80 mph or more, these strongest gusts most likely across Scotland and the far north of England.”

As things stand, the game is expected to go ahead, although the local Safety Advisory Group may have to decide whether it will. The group includes officials from both clubs, as well as representatives from Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council.

Although postponements are rare in the Premier League, Liverpool has seen another of its high-profile games called off in recent years due to adverse weather conditions.

The Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park had to be postponed around four hours before kick-off during the 2024/25 season due to Storm Darragh. The game was moved from December 7 to February 12 as a result.

Should Sunday’s game go ahead, Liverpool will be looking to record its first home win in the Premier League this season, but will have to find a way of keeping a free-scoring Brighton side out, with Fabian Hurzeler’s side having already recorded 23 goals in just seven games.
