Young Reds need victory in final Group A fixture to keep qualification hopes alive at GFF U17 Gulf Cup in Qatar
Bahrain will look to secure a place in the GFF U17 Gulf Cup semi-finals when they face Oman on Wednesday, October 28, at 5.45pm Bahrain time at Saoud bin Abdulrahman Stadium in Doha, Qatar.
Coached by Khalid Hassan, the young Reds enter their final Group A fixture third in the standings with four points from three matches, behind leaders UAE on nine and China PR on seven.
China have already completed their group campaign, leaving Bahrain needing a victory by at least three goals to guarantee progression on goal difference.
A two-goal win would also be enough if Bahrain score at least three times, while a 2-0 victory would leave qualification dependent on fair-play disciplinary records, followed by a drawing of lots if necessary.
Bahrain head into the encounter following a 3-3 draw against China, inspired by a hat-trick from captain Hussain Zuhair.
Zuhair opened the scoring in the 18th minute before China struck three times to establish a 3-1 lead. The striker then headed home in the 69th minute and converted a penalty 10 minutes later to complete the comeback.
That result followed an opening 2-1 defeat to the UAE and a 1-0 victory over hosts Qatar.
Oman, meanwhile, sit fourth on three points and are already out of semi-final contention. They began their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to China before beating Qatar by the same scoreline, only to lose 2-1 to the UAE in their latest outing.
Already assured of a semi-final place, the UAE conclude their group campaign against Qatar on Wednesday at Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium, with kick-off also scheduled for 5.45pm Bahrain time.
In Group B, Egypt have secured top spot with 12 points from four matches, leaving defending champions Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Iraq competing for the remaining semi-final berth.
Saudi Arabia and Yemen are level on four points, one ahead of Iraq, while bottom-placed Kuwait have already been eliminated.
Group B concludes on Thursday, October 29, when Saudi Arabia face Iraq and Yemen meet Kuwait. Both matches kick off at 5.45pm Bahrain time.
The top two teams from each group advance to the November 1 semi-finals, with group winners facing runners-up from the opposite group.
The final takes place on November 4, while knockout matches level after 90 minutes will go directly to penalties without extra time.
