Wolff already ‘vetting’ his potential successors at Mercedes

Toto Wolff has revealed that he is already looking for the people who will take Mercedes into its next chapter, admitting that potential successors to his dual role as team principal and CEO are already being “vetted” behind the scenes.

The 54-year-old Austrian has been one of Formula 1’s most influential figures since joining the Brackley outfit in 2013, overseeing an unprecedented period of dominance while building up a 33% ownership stake in the team.

But with his current contract due to expire at the end of 2026, the question of who might eventually replace him is no longer merely hypothetical.

Wolff is not preparing to pull the plug on his Mercedes involvement overnight. Instead, his succession plan could see the responsibilities he has shouldered for more than a decade divided among several people, allowing the team to maintain its competitive edge without relying on a single figure at the top.

And, judging by his latest comments, the search for the right combination of leadership talent is already under way.

One Wolff could become two or three

Speaking on the Cheeky Pint podcast, Wolff explained that his responsibilities could eventually be distributed across multiple executives rather than handed wholesale to a single replacement.

“There will be a solid management structure,” he said.

“I believe my job is going to be divided between two or three people that I'm vetting at the moment that I believe are already doing a great job with all of their strengths in various areas.

“And then it’s gonna be different, but it will be a successful team.”

That approach would represent a significant transition for Mercedes, where Wolff has combined strategic oversight, commercial responsibilities and day-to-day leadership since 2013.

Under his stewardship, the team won eight consecutive constructors’ championships between 2014 and 2021, while Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg delivered seven drivers’ titles between them.

Mercedes is now building its future around Andrea Kimi Antonelli, with the young Italian emerging as a potential championship contender in just his second season.

Ensuring the leadership structure evolves without destabilising that progress will be a central consideration in any succession plan.

Bradley Lord, Mercedes’ former communications chief who was appointed deputy team principal for 2026, is already part of the management structure.

Whether he ultimately assumes greater responsibility remains to be seen, however, with Wolff offering no names for the positions he is currently assessing.

An exit without a clean break?

Wolff’s succession planning also comes with an important complication: he is not simply an employee contemplating retirement. His ownership in the team means that even if he steps away from executive responsibilities, his relationship with Mercedes is likely to continue.

“I think a clean break is probably not possible if I continue to own it with my family,” he confirmed. “So that kind of executive, non-executive chairmanship is something that may happen.

“But it needs to happen in a very, very precise way. Because you can't be on the sidelines and interfere with the daily business.”

Wolf’s route to Mercedes leadership began with a shareholding and board position at Williams in 2009. He remained there until 2012 and was part of the organisation when Pastor Maldonado secured its most recent Grand Prix victory, in Spain that year.

Now, more than a decade into his Mercedes tenure, Wolff is considering how to make himself less indispensable without severing his ties to the team.

The next generation of leadership may already be taking shape, but the Austrian intends to ensure that any handover is as carefully managed as the championship-winning operation he helped build.
