Jadon Sancho has formally been offered a contract until the end of the season by Spanish club Getafe – on a fraction of the salary he was earning at Manchester United.
Cash-strapped Getafe have proposed paying Sancho just €400,000 (£335,000) in wages from now until June. The 26-year-old is believed to have been paid around £250,000 a week at United where his contract expired at the completion of the last campaign.
The former England international has been a free agent since then, meaning he can be signed at any time, and is attracted by the idea of playing in La Liga. He recognises it could also be a good shop window to kickstart his career.
The winger has therefore not ruled out joining Getafe, despite wages of just more than £10,000-a-week, and wants to meet under-pressure coach José Bordalás before making his final decision. Bordalás has accused the club of failing to deliver on recruitment and squad depth.
Sancho joined United for £73m from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 but failed to live up to the fee. He spent loan spells back at Dortmund, at Chelsea and last season with Aston Villa, where he made 39 appearances including as a late substitute in the Europa League final win, until his contract expired.
Given his status and previous earnings the deal will be examined by La Liga should Sancho agree to play for Getafe for such a reduced salary.
La Liga recently looked at the deal that former Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal agreed to also sign for Getafe, also on a free transfer, but on low wages. Madrid-based Getafe are 15th in La Liga.
Sancho has been posting training videos on Instagram, including a visit to non-League side Flixton with the North West Counties club then having to issue a statement clarifying that he was not on trial with them.
