UPL: Lugazi, Express share spoils in goalless draw
  • Uganda Premier League | MD 7 | Wednesday October 21, 2026
  • Lugazi FC 0-0 Express FC

Lugazi FC and Express FC missed the chance to climb the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League table after playing out a goalless draw at Lugazi Stadium in Najjembe on Wednesday evening.

Both sides created opportunities to win the Matchday Seven encounter, but poor finishing and some excellent goalkeeping ensured the points were shared.

The result leaves Lugazi 11th with eight points, while Express remain 13th on six points. It was Lugazi’s second draw of the campaign and Express’ third.

Express goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya was named Man of the Match after making crucial saves to keep the visitors in the game.

The visitors registered the first shot through Abasi Muluya, whose effort went wide, but Lugazi gradually took control and began asking questions of the Express defence.

Lugazi came close to breaking the deadlock in the 17th minute, only for Express goalkeeper Duncan Sseninde to make a save. A minute later, Abdul Rashid Kawawa missed another opportunity by inches after connecting with John Kokas’ delivery into the goal area.

The hosts continued to press, with Musa Ssali controlling the midfield and earning applause from the home supporters.

Express, however, remained dangerous on the counter. Muluya tested the Lugazi defence again in the 42nd minute with a powerful shot, but a defender blocked the effort before the visitors won a corner.

Neither side could find a breakthrough before the interval, and the teams went into the break locked at 0-0.

The second half produced an open contest, with both sides pushing forward in search of a goal.

Lugazi came closest in the 57th minute when Kawawa delivered a cross for Cromwell Rwothomio. The forward’s header struck the crossbar, and he nearly turned the rebound into the net from close range, leaving the home side wondering how they had failed to score.

Lugazi responded by introducing Adam Mutesasira for Dickson Matama in the 58th minute as they sought to make their pressure count.

Louis Amagu Anguti then unleashed a powerful effort that forced Kigonya into an excellent save, keeping Express level.

The hosts made three more changes in the 64th minute, bringing on Isaac Wagoina, Alpha Thierry Ssali and Isa Glory Kisule for Habert Asiimwe, Steven Yiga and Henry Wamala.

Express were also forced into a change when the injured Nicholas Jjonga made way for Moses Sseruyide in the 70th minute.

Four minutes later, Express threatened to steal the lead when Duncan Sseninde fired a powerful long-range shot. Lugazi goalkeeper Allan Batali reacted sharply to punch the ball away, denying the visitors before they could capitalise on the opportunity.

Lugazi survived the resulting corner and pushed forward again, but Kokas missed another chance from close range as the hosts continued to struggle in front of goal.

Hamza Mulambuzi received a yellow card in the 81st minute as the contest grew tense in the closing stages.

With the game heading towards a stalemate, Lugazi introduced Alvin Burungi and Fahad Jembr for Rwothomio and Kawawa in the second minute of added time.

The hosts appeared to have snatched a late winner, but their celebrations were cut short when the goal was ruled out for offside.

The final whistle confirmed a frustrating afternoon for both sides, particularly Lugazi, who had several opportunities to claim all three points. Express, meanwhile, could take comfort in a hard-earned away point, with Kigonya’s performance proving decisive.

Elsewhere, BUL FC ended NEC FC’s unbeaten run with a 2-1 victory. Ronald Madoi and Swabir Mpasa scored for BUL, while Marvin Oshaba netted NEC’s equalizer that turned into a consolation goal. Currently its only BUL FC and SC Villa who remain unbeaten this season.

Lugazi’s next assignment is against Lugazi on October 28 at Phillip Omondi Stadium, while Express will host Kataka FC on October 27 as both sides seek to return to winning ways.
