Como midfielder Nico Paz expressed admiration for De Kuip’s atmosphere following a 3-2 Champions League defeat to Feyenoord, Ziggo Sport reported. Despite the loss, the Argentine secured a souvenir after former Feyenoord player Kees van Wonderen returned a match-worn shirt belonging to Paz’s father from 1996.
Feyenoord claimed their first points of the Champions League competition phase on Wednesday evening by overcoming Como 3-2 in Rotterdam. The Dutch side turned the match around, leaving the visitors empty-handed. Speaking to Ziggo Sport broadcasters Wytse van der Goot, Kees van Wonderen, and Ruud Gullit after the match, Nico Paz admitted the stadium environment proved formidable.
“It was great to play here. The fans are impressive and make an enormous amount of noise,” Paz said. “It was difficult because Feyenoord has a good team. It was a nice match. We could not take the three points and must now focus on the next game.” Como had arrived with three points after winning their opening match of the tournament 4-1 against RB Leipzig, but the Italian club failed to continue that strong start in Rotterdam.
The fixture yielded a second storyline away from the pitch when Kees van Wonderen produced a football shirt from three decades prior. In 1996, Van Wonderen traded jerseys with Pablo Paz following a UEFA Cup encounter between Feyenoord and CD Tenerife, which ended in a 4-2 victory for the Spanish visitors. Retaining the garment for nearly thirty years, Van Wonderen coordinated through Como director Mark-Jan Fledderus to arrange a reunion with Pablo’s son.
Upon receiving the relic, the younger Paz pulled it on immediately ahead of his return to the dressing room. Analyst Ruud Gullit noted that Nico Paz’s own match-worn jersey from the evening is slated for an auction with all proceeds directed to Gehandicaptensport Nederland, with Gullit warning it should fetch no less than 5000 euro.
The result lifts Feyenoord to three points in the Champions League competition phase following an opening 5-1 defeat to FC Barcelona.
