The 2027 AFC Asian Cup faces mounting security concerns after a missile strike targeted Riyadh International Airport, prompting questions over whether the tournament will proceed as scheduled from January 7 to February 5, 2027, according to reports by Suara.com. The security situation in Saudi Arabia has drawn international attention following regional military escalations involving Houthi attacks from Yemen. As security concerns mounted, the Japan Football Association decided to withdraw from the FIFAe World Cup.
Despite ongoing regional tensions, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) maintained that preparations continue on schedule. In an official statement issued on Thursday, October 15, 2026, the LOC stated that coordination with the Asian Football Confederation and stakeholders is ongoing. In an additional statement on Friday, October 16, 2026, cited by Radar Cirebon, the LOC confirmed that Persiapan di seluruh bidang organisasi dan operasional berjalan sesuai jadwal yang telah disetujui, termasuk pengerjaan stadion, fasilitas, dan layanan pendukung,
as infrastructure work, stadiums, and operational services proceed according to the agreed timeline. Out of the eight venues prepared for the 2027 tournament, five are located in Riyadh, which is scheduled to host 31 matches—including the opening fixture between Saudi Arabia and Palestine, as well as the final. Additional matches are scheduled in Al Khobar, where the newly constructed 47,000-seat Aramco Stadium has completed its development phases, as reported by Bola.com. The venue will host Group F matches for the Indonesian national team under coach John Herdman, including their second group match against Qatar, and will serve as the new home stadium for Al Qadsiah FC.
While local organizers press ahead with facility development, the Asian Football Confederation has acknowledged that schedule adjustments remain possible. Speaking to reporters in Zurich, AFC Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa stated that a one-year postponement to 2028 could be implemented if regional security conditions do not improve, according to Kompas.id. The governing body has not yet released a definitive verdict on tournament safety, with The Guardian reporting that officials initially declined specific comments regarding player safety concerns.
Security apprehensions have already impacted other sporting events in the region.
The Asian Football Confederation continues to monitor regional developments ahead of the tournament’s scheduled kickoff on January 7, 2027.
