Roy Keane didn't buy any of Bruno Fernandes' apology to sacked Man Utd boss

Manchester United legend Roy Keane wasn't buying any of it following Bruno Fernandes' apology for 'letting down' his boss after he received the sack

Bruno Fernandes may soon find himself owing another Manchester United manager an apology if Michael Carrick is sacked. Not that his previous attempt went down too well with club legend Roy Keane.

Captain Fernandes, 32, is currently at the centre of scrutiny for questioning Carrick's tactics in Wednesday's 4-1 thrashing at Como. The Champions League loss leaves United without a win in seven games, increasing pressure on Carrick to be replaced.

It was a similar story two years ago when Erik ten Hag was relieved of his duties following another struggle for results at Old Trafford. And the Portuguese playmaker confirmed he had apologised to Ten Hag personally after the team failed to save his job.

"We all know that when the manager leaves everyone is involved," Fernandes told Sky Sports at the time. "But only one pays because it’s easier to get rid of a manager than 10 or 15 players.

"I spoke with the manager and I apologised to him if there was something I could’ve done better for him, that I feel really disappointed that he’s gone. But what remains with me was he feels I always gave everything and try to help in any way possible."

United icon Keane wasn't taken with that explanation, however, and brushed off Fernandes' attempts to make things right. And the Irishman suggested he wouldn't have had much use for Fernandes' words if he were in Ten Hag's shoes.

"Too little, too late," said Keane in response to those comments on Sky Sports. "Listen, these are always awkward interviews but I wouldn’t have much time and patience for a player to say, ‘Listen, sorry we’ve let you down’. Too little, too late.

"You’re judged by what you do on the football pitch and I don’t think Bruno (has) done enough in a lot of the games where he didn’t show that leadership. So, it’ll be interesting to obviously hear what Ten Hag has to say about it but you also have to move on."

Keane expanded on his reasoning to insist the whole squad was at fault. However, he pinpointed a certain amount of blame on skipper Fernandes, whom he felt 'hadn't done enough as captain', in his eyes.

He continued: "I don’t think Bruno [has] done enough as a captain of Man United over last year to help the manager out. Far from it. The proof’s there with all the results.

"Not just on to Bruno, of course, but I don’t think he showed enough leadership skills when the going got tough with some of the performances. I don’t think Bruno should be too proud of himself of what’s happened to the Man United manager over the last week or two with Ten Hag. I think the players let the manager down ultimately."

Fernandes' comments regarding United's approach against Como came not long after Lisandro Martinez also aimed criticism at the club. However, his remarks were aimed at the hierarchy, suggesting director Jason Wilcox hadn't done enough to upgrade the squad over the summer.

Keane's Sky Sports colleague Jamie Carragher has blasted Fernandes as a "disgrace" for putting the blame on Carrick after such a tough loss. Carrick said sorry to United's supporters after the trip to Italy as the gloom continues to draw in following another desperate start to the campaign.
