Ssimbwa-Ayala managerial resets in an unpredictable clash

When two wounded buffaloes meet, the dust rarely settles quietly. URA and Vipers may be limping into tonight’s Nakivubo showdown, but their rivalry has a habit of keeping fans on their toes.

With two proven tacticians occupying the respective dugouts, expect the temperature to rise as both sides hunt lost ground and a fresh foothold in the title race.

Sam Ssimbwa’s Tax Collectors welcome John ‘Ayala’ Luyinda’s defending champions in a contest carrying more than three points. For both coaches, it is an opportunity to restore belief, steady troubled dressing rooms and remind the leading pack that their ambitions remain alive.

The managerial resets have produced contrasting opening chapters. Returning to URA to repair the damage left by Jimmy Kintu, Ssimbwa began with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Mbalangu’s UPDF on Tuesday at Nakivubo. Denis Ssekitoleko’s 62nd-minute own goal ended URA’s five-match winless run, although missed chances exposed unfinished business.

Ayala, brought back to Vipers after Denis Lavagne’s departure, endured a harsher introduction. Mbarara City’s Gadaffi Kacancu struck in the 30th minute on Wednesday to condemn the Venoms to a 1-0 defeat at Rwamwanja Stadium. Even a numerical advantage after Mbarara were reduced to 10 men could not rescue Vipers.

Sigh of relief

Both coaches are preaching redemption, character and silverware. Ssimbwa says his players must change their attitude after declaring their ambition to win the trophy.

“I asked them their ambition and they told me winning the trophy and I told them they must henceforth change their attitude,” he said.

His immediate tactical demand is to move possession higher up the pitch, having criticised URA’s previous tendency to dominate the ball in their own half.

Ayala, meanwhile, wants courage, consistency and attractive winning football. “We have lacked consistence previously and you can’t win trophies if you can’t put up a good run,” he said. “We want to play entertaining and winning football.”

The tactical duel promises intrigue. URA must turn territorial ambition into cutting edge after squandering opportunities against UPDF. Vipers need greater invention against organised defending after their attacks became predictable, with long balls towards the wings failing to unlock Mbarara.

Venomous assault

History offers Vipers encouragement. They have won four of their last five league meetings with URA, the other ending 1-1. Their recent 0-3, 2-0 and consecutive 2-0 victories underline their psychological advantage, but tonight’s encounter begins under new leadership.

The stakes are considerable. Vipers are seventh with 11 points from seven matches, having scored 13 and conceded three. URA are 15th on seven points, with six goals scored and 10 conceded.

Victory would give either side momentum to close the gap on the leading contenders; defeat would deepen doubts surrounding their rebuilding projects.

Chasing Bul

Elsewhere, leaders Bul, on 19 points from seven games, host fourth-placed Entebbe UPPC (15) at Njeru. Second-placed SC Villa (18) visit Lugazi (13th, eight points) at Najjembe, while KCCA, fifth on 13 points after four consecutive wins, visit Mbarara City (12th, eight).

Kitara, 10th on eight points from four matches after their Caf Confederation Cup exit, visit UPDF at Nakivubo. These fixtures could reshape the chasing pack, but at Nakivubo, two wounded giants must first prove that redemption is more than a promise.
