Mamelodi Sundowns were unable to find a breakthrough against Wiliete SC, settling for a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie in Angola on Sunday.
Head coach Miguel Cardoso made two changes to the side that beat Orlando Pirates to win the MTN8 last weekend, with Ricardo Goss replacing the injured Ronwen Williams in goal and Fawaaz Basadien coming in at left-back for Aubrey Modiba.
The match kicked off 30 minutes late because of adverse weather conditions, but Sundowns made a positive start once play got underway, taking the initiative and creating the better chances in the opening half.
Sundowns came close to taking the lead inside the opening five minutes when Bryan León ran in behind the Wiliete defence after being picked out by Nuno Santos.
León got his effort away, but a Wiliete defender cleared the ball off the line to deny the visitors an early advantage.
The Brazilians continued to dictate the tempo, but their attacking pressure failed to produce a goal before the break.
Their first-half performance was also overshadowed by an injury to midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who was stretchered off after a heavy challenge from a Wiliete player.
Mokoena’s departure was a worrying moment for Cardoso, with Sundowns continuing to juggle domestic commitments and their continental campaign.
Despite enjoying the better of the first half, Sundowns could not turn their possession and chances into a lead, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the return leg in South Africa.
The result means the Brazilians will need to make home advantage count if they are to progress to the Champions League group stages.
Meanwhile, Durban City enjoyed a more positive outing in the CAF Confederation Cup, beating AS Port Louis 3-1 in the first leg of their second preliminary round tie at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Haashim Domingo and Gaston Sirino scored for Eric Tinkler’s side before Tashreeq Morris converted a penalty, giving Durban City a two-goal cushion to take into the return leg.
