Liverpool Struggle for Premier League Goals Under Andoni Iraola

Liverpool face a puzzling domestic scoring gap in the 2026-27 Premier League season. They have netted just nine goals in seven matches. This comes despite averaging 3.75 goals per game across European and domestic cup competitions under head coach Andoni Iraola.

Domestic matches tell a different story from European nights at Anfield. Liverpool have swept aside opponents with an impressive 15 goals across three UEFA Champions League fixtures and a Carabao Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur. Their English Premier League campaign has stalled in the final third. Ten different goalscorers have found the net across all competitions this season. Yet the team sits on a modest domestic tally of nine goals from their first seven games.

That domestic scoring rate leaves the club behind high-flying Brighton, who enter their upcoming fixture with 23 top-flight goals, alongside Manchester City’s 20. Expected goals data compiled by analysts suggests Liverpool’s domestic returns are underperforming, with an expected goals figure standing at 10.9. Before the weekend fixtures, eight clubs—including newly promoted Ipswich Town and Manchester United—had scored more league goals than the Reds.

Iraola Adapts to Frequent Low Defensive Blocks

Opposition tactics in the Premier League have forced Iraola’s side to adapt. Liverpool have faced a low defensive block in 28 percent of their matches this season, the highest proportion of any club in the division. Conversely, they have encountered high blocks in just 15 percent of their games, the lowest in the league.

When appointed in July, the former Bournemouth manager indicated he actually welcomed deep-lying defences because they allow his team to dictate possession.

I am looking forward to spending as much time inside the opposition half — with the ball and without the ball — because I feel we are closer to scoring from that position.

The reality of breaking through those packed defences has proven more complex. Compounding the challenge, Liverpool have conceded the opening goal in four of their seven league matches. Falling behind early allows opponents to retreat into disciplined defensive structures with greater security. Iraola admitted uncertainty over the exact root of the domestic scoring disparity following victories over Villarreal and Atletico Madrid.

I don’t really know the reason.

The head coach noted that while domestic attacking output has dipped, the team has defended with greater discipline in the league. Liverpool have kept three clean sheets and conceded eight goals domestically, matching the eight goals they allowed across just four Champions League and Carabao Cup fixtures.

Analysts Contrast European Space

Technical differences between domestic and continental football offer part of the explanation. A current analyst working for a Champions League club points to the spatial dynamics unique to international fixtures.

The analyst added that European competition yields higher chance creation because attacking structures benefit from open space—an environment Iraola exploited successfully during his tenure at Bournemouth. The club assembled substantial attacking firepower for the campaign, recruiting players including Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Bradley Barcola, Cody Gakpo, Victor Munoz, and Rio Ngumoha.

Mitigation for the current scoring rate comes in historical perspective. Arsenal claimed the 2025-26 Premier League title with an average of 1.87 goals per match, sitting on 11 goals at a comparable stage of the current campaign.

Brighton Arrives on Sunday

Anfield awaits its first Premier League home win under Iraola as Brighton arrive on Sunday. Brighton approach the fixture willing to control possession, an approach that may offer Liverpool the transitional space missing against deep-lying defensive units. Following the weekend match, a fixture against reigning champions Arsenal awaits on the domestic schedule.
