Chelsea fan's patience is beginning to run very thin with Wesley Fofana
Chelsea fan's patience is beginning to run very thin with Wesley Fofana

Chelsea bowed out of the Carabao Cup at the fourth round stage on Wednesday night as they lost 6-5 on penalties to Liverpool at Anfield after the two sides drew 1-1 after 90 minutes, and post-match many people are pointing fingers at Wesley Fofana for why the side lost. And, with good reason too.

The Blues took the lead through a Morgan Rogers penalty after 40 minutes, before Liverpool got one of their own, after Wesley Fofana raised his hand in the penalty box from a Kostas Tsimikas cross to give Liverpool the chance to equalise through Cody Gakpo just before half-time.

The game would then go to penalties with both sides missing multiple penalties, with substitutes Valentin Barco, Emanuel Emegha, and Wesley Fofana all failing miserably from the spot for Chelsea in front of the Kop, with Fofana's probably being the worst of the lot, lifting it high into the Liverpool faithful to seal Chelsea's fate, and to keep up their recent penalty shootout woes against the Reds.

Fofana's missed penalty was the cherry on top of what was a night to forget for the centre back, with his Chelsea nightmare continuing, and after last night, many fans are getting fed up with lacklustre performances, especially after the hefty price tag that Chelsea paid Leicester for the French international.

A mixture of on- and off-field mistakes has had Chelsea fans scratching their heads as to why he is such a mainstay in the side, when his performances don't match what is expected of a Chelsea player. Fofana is a perfect mould of a modern-day centre back, with his pace, passing, and his ball-carrying ability, but that doesn't seem to be what people talk about him.

Looking into Fofana's stats last night, from the outside looking in, it seemed like the 25-year-old had a solid game, making three tackles, two blocks, and a massive 11 clearances, whilst winning four of his five ground duels as well as five of six aerial duels.

But what seems always seems to happen is that when the ex-Leicester man looks settled in a game a mistake completely derails him and his confidence leaving him as a liability for his teammates around him, which unfortunately has been the case during his four-year Chelsea career.

Talking post-match, Morgan Rogers, who had put Chelsea in front, spoke on the performances of his teammates and, rather than blaming those who made mistakes or missed penalties, chose to focus on the overall disappointment that the side felt after being dumped out.

“Yeah, especially here. I think we quieted down the crowd. We had a really good start, We got our feet into the game and took the lead. To concede so quickly, bringing it back to 1-1, was difficult, it is disappointing to concede straight after .”

“Listen, it’s tough in that environment at the Kop, taking a penalty. It’s not easy, so there’s no blaming anyone who had so much courage to take it. I look at them in the eye, stepping up and being that person to take it. You can never have any faults with that.”

When Chelsea signed Fofana, he was seen as one of the top young centre-backs in the country. Now, fast-forward four years, and come January could be looking for a new club, even though he's 25 years old, Fofana is seen as one of the more senior players in the squad, which goes to show what stage Chelsea are currently going through.
