SURE, football fans around the country are thrilled about the weekend’s Soweto Derby; and they have every right to be excited.

However, closer to home, fans in our province are also drooling in anticipation; this time for the Northern Cape Derby.

Hungry Lions will put their winning run to the test when they face Northern Cape rivals Upington City in a Motsepe Foundation Championship clash at Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium on Saturday.

Both sides head into the encounter in good form, setting up an intriguing contest between two teams looking to build momentum as the league campaign progresses.

Lions on a roll, City on the rise

Hungry Lions have won their last three matches without conceding a goal. They beat Casric Stars 2-0 on October 10, defeated the University of Pretoria by the same scoreline on October 17 and followed that up with a 1-0 victory over Venda FC on October 24.

The run has given Lions three successive victories and a 5-0 aggregate score across those matches. They will now look to carry that defensive solidity into a local contest against opponents who have also found their feet in recent weeks.

Upington City have responded to a defeat against Gomora United with back-to-back wins. They beat Orbit College 2-0 on October 17 before edging Midlands Wanderers 1-0 away from home on October 23.

City will be aiming to extend that run against their neighbours, while Lions will be keen to make it four consecutive victories and maintain their momentum.

Little to separate teams

The teams' most recent meeting ended in a goalless draw on May 2, suggesting that Saturday's encounter could be another closely fought affair. Both sides have shown an ability to keep opponents at bay in recent matches, making the battle to find a breakthrough potentially decisive.

With both teams arriving on the back of winning runs, the fixture offers an important opportunity to turn recent form into further progress in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

A victory would give either side a valuable boost as the season develops.

The match takes place at Upington’s Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium on Saturday, October 31, with kick-off scheduled for 3.30pm.

Tickets are priced at R50 for adults and R20 for children.
