After capturing the AAA Cruiserweight Championship back at AAA Noche de los Grandes, Rey Fenix has become one of the unsung MVPs of WWE.
Fenix has defended his title not only in AAA, but also on SmackDown, with also being announced he was now able to defend the title across EVERY brand, including a Raw match against Ethan Page.
Fenix is the latest name to join the likes of Penta, Dragon Lee and Chad Gable of smaller stars breaking out in the company solely based on their in-ring body of work, and the Cruiserweight Championship is a big part of that.
With Fenix now defending the title across all brands, now is the perfect time to officially revive the division.
If there is one major positive to WWE purchasing AAA, it is WWE’s new focus on spotlighting luchadores, both in the promotion itself and in AAA.
The spotlight on the lucha stars allowed for the breakout of Penta, with him now being Mr. Money In The Bank and seemingly destined to become a World Champion in the next year.
On top of Penta, both Rey Fenix and Dragon Lee were struggling for TV time last year, but they have both now gone on to become among the best in-ring workers WWE has right now.
Of course, this distinction isn’t solely for the Lucha stars, as this shift has also put new spotlight on names like Chad Gable and Je’von Evans.
In 2016, WWE relaunched the Cruiserweight Division after almost a decade, doing so in a major way in the form of the Cruiserweight Classic Tournament.
The Tournament was among the very best things produced by WWE over the past 10 years, with it including current WWE names, names that would go on to join the 205 Live roster and revived division, as well as outside names like Zack Sabre Jr and Kota Ibushi.
With 5 brands now available for WWE to pick from across Raw, SmackDown, NXT, AAA and TNA, there is more than enough talent to revive the division and treat it properly this time around.
It would also be a nice way for WWE to honour PAC following his passing, with the tournament paying homage to the former ‘King of the Cruiserweights’.
