Ahead of Kimi Antonelli’s first chance of clinching the 2026 F1 title at this weekend’s United States Grand Prix, the young Italian has revealed when he is hoping to have it all wrapped up.
Currently boasting a 102-point lead over George Russell in the drivers’ championship, it would take nothing short of a miracle for Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli to lose the title race from here.
In fact, Antonelli can clinch the championship at the Circuit of the Americas this weekend, but will need a few things to go his way first. In short, the Italian will have to extend his championship lead by 23 points, so he will need to win the Grand Prix at the very least.
As a result, Antonelli appears to be a bit more realistic regarding his hopes of securing the title as soon as possible.
In a social media video posted to the official X account of the San Antonio Spurs, Antonelli met with NBA superstar Victor Wembanyama ahead of the league’s season-openers on Tuesday.
The Mercedes driver told the Frenchman that he would be in attendance at the Frost Bank Center to see the Spurs take on the Oklahoma City Thunder, given this weekend’s United States Grand Prix takes place in the same state.

The game is a repeat of the Western Conference Finals from last year’s NBA campaign, where the Spurs reigned supreme over their rivals before going on to lose the championship to the New York Knicks.
Naturally, Antonelli was also asked about his own championship aspirations, to which he replied: “It’s good, it’s good. I’m fighting for the championship, it’s getting close. So, hopefully, two weeks and we clinch it, but yeah, let’s see.”
Given the conversation took place on the eve of the Spurs’ 2026/27 season-opener, Antonelli appears to be eyeing next weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix as the site of his maiden championship feat.
Failing that, the young Italian will then look to secure the crown at the following round of racing in Interlagos. Antonelli has made no secret of his infatuation with F1 legend Ayrton Senna, which would make a coronation at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix very fitting.
At this point, it’s hard not to argue that Antonelli has one of the best possible luxuries when it comes to being in a title race all on his own.
His biggest problem is not those trying to steal his crown, but rather which circuit he would rather win the title at. Saying that, he could even be crowned while at home amid the ongoing question marks regarding the running of the Qatar and Abu Dhabi rounds.
