Sundowns lost their title as reigning continental champions on Saturday, exiting the tournament on the away goals rule after a 1-1 aggregate draw against Angolan club Wiliete SC in the second preliminary round.
The Tshwane club has been a crucial component of the national team’s framework—especially notable during South Africa’s bronze-medal achievement at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, as well as their successful qualification paths for both the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
This national success has paralleled Sundowns’ continued dominance throughout Africa, leading to their second Champions League title last season. However, their failure to advance to the group stages this year has ignited a fierce discussion about player fatigue versus the need for vital international match experience.
One camp in this discussion posits that a reduced schedule will afford essential rest for overworked players. Meanwhile, others argue that regular participation in high-intensity continental competitions is crucial for local talents to acclimate to international football standards.
While Orlando Pirates succeeded in securing their place in the group stages, concerns linger over whether the Soweto club can match Sundowns’ historical continental performances.
Former Pirates coach Tinkler, who served as the Buccaneers’ assistant during the 2013 Champions League final, expressed his surprise at Sundowns’ unexpected exit, noting the growing mental and physical strain felt by elite players.
“I anticipated they would progress to the group stages given their quality. Clearly, this raises numerous questions—what could have caused this? As I mentioned, the modern game has evolved; the sheer number of competitions and games players must undertake is, in my view, excessive,” Tinkler stated.
“Fatigue is unavoidable; as I indicated, it will manifest. I believe it has impacted Sundowns, especially as they have been so successful over the years. Following the World Cup, players had to return to participate in CAF Champions League qualifiers. It’s not an easy task; it’s extremely challenging.”
“From what I observe, Pirates possess the qualities to compete in the Champions League, but are they able to reach Sundowns’ level? That remains uncertain.”
Hunt, who led Kaizer Chiefs to the CAF Champions League semi-finals in 2021, emphasized that participating in continental competitions provides players with invaluable experiences that domestic leagues cannot replicate.
“It’s beneficial for the game; it’s advantageous for the players; nothing compares to playing on the continent, as it makes you more astute and resilient. The dynamics of the game are entirely different there,” Hunt remarked.
“People often fail to grasp that fact. The more teams that participate, the more overall benefit we will observe.”
Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana will be back in action next month during a pivotal home-and-away double-header against Kenya for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, where consecutive victories would place South Africa on the verge of qualification.
