Rio Ngumoha was once again the star of the show for Liverpool as the Reds beat Villarreal 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller at Anfield on Tuesday evening.
It was by no means a polished performance, but the spirit that was so often absent last season is returning game by game. Slowly, but surely, Liverpool are re-finding their identity, and it’s pleasing to see.
One of the main protagonists in Liverpool’s vibrant showing this season is Ngumoha. At 18, he’s ready for more. His performance against the Spanish side was more proof of this.
Rio Ngumoha just keeps making history:

?? Fifth-youngest Premier League goalscorer
?? Youngest Liverpool player to start a competitive match
? Youngest Liverpool player to play in Europe

Andoni Iraola has demonstrated his man-management skills by trusting Ngumoha and the likes of Trey Nyoni and Lewis Koumas, but it’s the former who is taking the biggest developmental steps forward.
His composure belies his age, and this was the case on Tuesday more than ever.
Playing in the Champions League is a different animal from the Premier League entirely, but Ngumoha doesn’t seem fazed.

His stats were quite incredible. Sofascore gave him a 9.7, and he won the Champions League’s official MOTM award too.

The decision to poach Ngumoha from Chelsea may be one of Liverpool’s strategic moves with the highest payoff in the long term. With very little investment. Liverpool paid Chelsea just £6.8m, per This is Anfield. The return on investment here is astronomical.
The 18-year-old seems destined for the very top of the game if he can avoid injury and keep developing at the same rate.
Once Ngumoha adds commensurate goals and assists to his game, he will be ready to start every game. But the move to the right wing has been a masterstroke, given how natural he is on the left. Ngumoha said this week that he’s happy to be adding a new skill to his toolkit.
“I feel like I’ve got a lot better playing there from the Newcastle game until now,” he said, per the Athletic.
“I’m understanding it more. Going away with England helped a lot as well. I like playing on both sides. It gives me another tool in the toolbox.”
