Historically, many legendary boxing champions have emerged from rough, bare-bones facilities rather than commercial, air-conditioned fitness clubs.
These “dungeons” are built for hard work, sweat, and endurance.
Fighters “torture” themselves through gruelling workouts to strip away ego and build resilience.
That is exactly what the unappreciated yet successful Sibongile Boxing Family gym in Dundee looks like.
It has three worn-out punching bags, sparring gloves, and bare concrete.
We will continue producing champions ...
— Nkosinathi Hlatshwayo
Trainers Nkosinathi Hlatshwayo and Nkosinathi Thusi have removed anything that spells comfort and turned their old-school gym into a home of champions.
It has produced SA, IBF international and ABU flyweight holder Nkosingiphile Sibisi; SA and IBF international and ABU featherweight champ Lindelani Sibisi (no relation); ABU junior featherweight titlist Mxolisi Zuma; WBF Africa junior featherweight champ Sakhile Hlatshwayo; WBF international Nhlakanipho Kunene; and KZN flyweight titlist Mncedisi Dube.
It is the same gym where Phiwokuhle “Ben 10″ Mnguni — bronze medallist in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in England — is trained.
Mnguni is hard at work, training to qualify for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
“We will continue producing champions, and that begins from December 11 at the Galleria in Sandton until the 19th,” said Hlatshwayo.
Lindelani Sibisi will defend his SA belt against Sabelo Ndwandwe on December 11, and Mxolisi Zuma will face Asekho Nocele for the vacant WBF title in Cape Town on the 12th.
On the 19th, Nkosingiphile Sibisi’s SA belt will be on the line against Njabulo Buthelezi in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal.
In the same tournament — to be staged jointly by Hlula Dladla and Zandile Malinga — Sakhile Hlatshwayo and Lebohang Langa will fight for the vacant SA junior featherweight title.
Nhlakanipho Kunene and Siphelele Myeza will fight for the vacant KZN mini-flyweight title in the same tournament.
“I saw Ndwandwe in action ... he is aggressive, with little skill, and won’t be a problem at all to Lindelani,” said Hlatshwayo.
“Nocele is a good boxer, and fans will enjoy the fight because Zuma is a skilful boxer.”
Sibisi beat Buthelezi for the KZN title in 2023.
“The result will stay the same,” said Hlatshwayo, whose charge stands to claim the SA belt if he wins in what will be his fifth successful defence.
Regarding his son Sakhile’s fight, Hlatshwayo described Langa as a powerhouse who will be handled accordingly.
Hlatshwayo promised fans a war of attrition between Kunene and Myeza.
“Sadly, all our boys have to achieve their goals away from home because the local municipality in Dundee is of no help,” he said.
