FORMER England football star Paul Merson has been ordered to pay over £1,600 after neglecting to settle his road tax.
The Sky Sports analyst expressed remorse to magistrates for what he described as an “honest” oversight, yet he still faced a hefty financial fine.
His £20,000 VW Touareg was flagged as untaxed for six months by an ANPR camera in Cardiff back in March.
The 58-year-old, who resides in Teddington, South West London, told magistrates in Croydon, South London: “I genuinely believed I had taken care of it.”
“I truly apologize,” he added.
The two-time league winner with Arsenal was previously banned for six months in 2024 due to speeding violations in a single month.

Merson also received a 14-month ban in 2011 for falling asleep at the wheel and crashing into a lorry on the M40 motorway near Warwick.
Documents from the court revealed that the tax on his £20,000 VW had expired six months prior.
Merson admitted to using a vehicle without a valid vehicle license under the Single Justice Procedure.
He won league titles with Arsenal in 1989 and 1991, along with an FA Cup and League Cup double in 1993.
Once praised for his openness regarding struggles with alcohol, drugs, and gambling addictions, Merson earned 21 caps for the England national team.
